It is official now – Subaru is testing the new Crosstrek. Spy photos indicate there will be a lot of changes, marking the start of the third generation. The subcompact crossover made its way in the US and became one of the favorite models in the segment. It is also the only hybrid in the family. The success of that project will make the Japanese company expand the lineup of hybrid vehicles. Finally, the next-gen 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is coming in the right moment, since selling numbers started to drop. Upcoming changes will draw more attention to the new edition.
The vehicle is spotted in California. According to the camouflage, changes are huge. Still, the company is not going to radically redesign the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek. It will be an evolutional upgrade from the last edition, with some solutions shared between the crossover, WRX, and Impreza. However, a lot of things are still unknown. For example, the Boxer engine is definitely the main choice. But, the current hybrid needs upgrades. The company is looking to expand the offer to larger SUVs. Also, the new Solterra concept introduced an idea of an all-electric crossover. Partnership with Toyota will soon deliver the first vehicles in the EV segment. Could Crosstrek be one of those models?
2023 Subaru Crosstrek Redesign Changes
So, the spy photos are here, showing the prototypes of the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek. The all-new crossover is going to bring plenty of changes, outside and inside. But, the heavy camo is hiding details we can discuss. Various sources claim there won’t be revolutionary turns from the current design language. Still, the Crosstrek needs something new to legitimate the third generation. Currently, the crossover is 176 inches long. We don’t expect a huge change in size. It is the downside of the vehicle – lack of space for passengers and cargo. But, expectations can’t be big when purchasing the subcompact crossover. The entire class is suffering because of this.
2023 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness
Ever since the Wilderness package was introduced for the Subaru Forester, fans went crazy for it. Now, we can find plenty of speculations about the off-road package for all other crossovers and SUVs, including the Crosstrek and Ascent. Outback Wilderness is already on the way. Now, it is time for the largest and smallest units to present the 4×4 package.
The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness is going to draw a lot of attention. First of all, this version will sit higher above the ground than the base edition. The third generation comes with a ground clearance above 9 inches. As you already knew, the 4×4 is a standard combination with the Boxer engine. However, the special tuning of the X-Mode will make off-roading even more thrilling. All-terrain tires are coming with the Wilderness edition. The special package also brings styling cues, such as unique bumpers, seats, and roof rails.
Engines and Specifications
The small crossover is going to keep a 2.0-liter engine as the base offer. It is capable of delivering 150 horsepower, more than enough for the vehicle of Crosstrek’s size. Upper trim levels are going to upgrade the ride with a 2.5-liter plant with more power. That is also the choice for the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness. Its 180 horsepower will make the crossover go anywhere – through the mud, forest, or up the hill. The downside is the price. An automatic transmission sends power to all wheels. The 4WD system is a trademark for Subaru vehicles.
2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid and PHEV
We are wondering what is happening with the hybrid engine. Crosstrek made a breakthrough and now the company is ready to expand the lineup. But, it doesn’t mean the existing configuration will be good enough for the next-gen crossover. The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid must be better to be competitive in the market. This vehicle already lacks power compared to larger crossovers, and it must fight its way with exceptional gas mileage. One of the options is the plug-in hybrid setup with extra energy. The final stage of evolution is an all-electric vehicle, based on the new Solterra concept. Subaru partners Toyota on this project, and the Japanese giant could help in other segments, including hybrid and PHEV systems.
Release Date and Price
The testing is in the final stages. The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is being spied more often, meaning the crossover is almost ready for production. Still, the release date and sales start won’t happen before the final quarter of 2022. The premiere might occur a few months before the Crosstrek enters dealerships. The price will go up a bit. The biggest increase will be for the hybrid edition. So, the base MSRP will be around $24,000, a 2.5-liter engine raises the cost by $3,000, and the hybrid is not going to be at least $35,000. Expect the price tag of $30,000 for the Wilderness edition.
