The 2024 Subaru Outback Hybrid is going to be the next model with such a drivetrain in the family. At this point, only Crosstrek is offering a hybrid setup. Soon, even Ascent SUV will use electric support to enhance efficiency. The next stage in the evolution of Outback and other Subaru vehicles is complete electrification. The company wants EVs all across the family early in the 2030s. It is too early to talk about 8-year plans.
There are two indicators pointing towards the 2024 Subaru Outback Hybrid. First, the company is now partner with Toyota, a leading manufacturer in this segment. Their hybrids are the most efficient in the world. For example, Rav4 is one of the most powerful crossovers with 300 hp coming from the PHEV system, while Highlander is the three-row SUV that returns 35 mpg. Subaru wants to take advantage of hybrid technology as well.
2024 Subaru Outback Hybrid Setup
So, the partnership with Toyota is there for obvious reasons. The automotive giant brings hybrid technology to the table. But, everything else is up to Subbie. The carmaker recently presented a new powertrain we believe it might be the base for the 2024 Subaru Outback Hybrid. A 1.8-liter turbo-four is currently available only in Japan. Experts are sure more markets will see the fresh configuration very soon, including the US. Of course, it is again the Boxer setup with the flat-four system.
Outputs are still unknown. The 2024 Outback Hybrid should take the position between the standard setup and the XT turbocharged version. That means a power output above 200 hp, but under 250 ponies. Why the hybrid model is so important? Well, it should improve the gas mileage of the crossover. The Outback can do 30 mpg combined. A hybrid version will be over 33 mpg. Also, have in mind that all-wheel drive is standard all across the lineup.
Under the hood of the standard model will still be a 2.5-liter engine. A CVT is a power router. Of course, all Subaru models are equipped with an all-wheel drive. And the engine is a flat-four with opposed cylinders. Fans also call them Boxer engines. As said, the crossover is able to do 30 mpg combined, and up to 34 mpg on the highway. The redesign could make the Outback lighter than before. Further, it leads to a more efficient ride.
An optional engine for the crossover is the turbocharged flat-four. Again, the Boxer system uses the engine with opposed pistons. This time, engineers are installing a 2.4-liter displacement for the Outback XT version. The total output is 260 hp and the performance is on a much higher level. The vehicle can hit 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. The fuel economy is still at a very good level, especially on the open road.
Redesign, Interior, New Colors
The current version of the crossover debuted in 2020. The 2024 Subaru Outback Hybrid is definitely the key upgrade, but it will be part of the bigger redesign. The company plans the mid-cycle refresh and both exterior and interior are going to bring a lot of novelties. Well, on the outside, we might see a revisit of the front fascia, with small modifications of the grille, headlights, bumper and hood. The dimensions should stay pretty much the same.
The cargo space on the current Outback is 32.5-76 cubic feet, depending if the second row is folded. Those numbers should stay at a similar level. Still, the revisit of the interior should improve comfort and safety. Features will be reshuffled. The Outback is offering 9 trim levels, and most of them will be carried over. Do not expect the Wilderness to appear for the 2024 Subaru Outback Hybrid. However, more other vehicles will get the impressive off-road package.
2024 Subaru Outback Hybrid Launch Date and Prices
The base model is one of the best buys. The Outback costs from $28,500, but it also comes with an all-wheel drive. The Wilderness version is very popular. You will need $10,000 to upgrade the ride for off-road duties. Or, you can spend that money to get the turbocharged engine. The most expensive packages reach $43,000 before you add optional upgrades.
The 2024 Subaru Outback Hybrid is going to use a new powertrain. Since it is a smaller displacement, the price shouldn’t go too much up compared to the standard 2.5-liter unit. Crosstrek is using the PHEV configuration and costs a lot more than the base version. If Subaru wants to be competitive, the Outback Hybrid is not going to be priced over $35,000.
