The comeback of the 2024 Nissan Xterra is still a hot topic. Still, the company keeps fans in suspense. The Terra SUV debuted in Asia, but that doesn’t mean too much for the vehicle with a similar name. First of all, the US market is quite different and more demanding. The company discontinued the Xterra because the redesign and improvements were about to cost too much. Now, the all-new model after a few years will be even more expensive to build. On the other hand, if they use the same platform as the one that underpins Terra, then the purpose won’t be the same as it used to be.
But, a lot of people still believe there is room for the 2024 Nissan Xterra in the lineup. We assume the SUV is going to be an off-road specialist and rival to Jeep Wrangler, Toyota 4Runner and other similar vehicles. Nevertheless, people admire off-roaders, but rather buy more versatile SUVs, such as Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer or Chevy Traverse. So, let’s check what can happen with the 2024 Xterra if comes back.
Where the SUV Fits?
The last edition of the SUV was 178 inches long. It is the size of the compact crossover. The new Terra is 192 inches long. That is more likely where we see the 2024 Nissan Xterra. The new Pathfinder is larger than before, and the difference between this SUV and the full-size Armada is just 10 inches. The Xterra can fit between those two, but we believe designers will make it a bit smaller. Besides the name, the size can be similar to Terra, with a body length of around 190 in.
2024 Nissan Xterra Engines and Specs
Again, we can compare the new 2024 Nissan Xterra to the previous version and existing configurations. But, the automotive industry is moving towards complete electrification, so it won’t be a surprise to see this SUV with a hybrid setup. But, let’s check classic configurations first. The last Xterra was out while diesel engines were still pretty popular. Although pretty small, the SUV didn’t use an oil burner, but a big 4.0-liter petrol engine. Nevertheless, that one is not in use anymore. Also, the market changed a lot in the past few years, so we can say that a kind of turbo plant will probably be the main solution.
The Terra SUV comes out with a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated I4. But, for a serious off-road drive, the 2024 Xterra will need a lot more power. Diesel unit is not an option, although the new SUV is using a 2.3 and a 2.5 turbodiesels. Engineers will have to come up with some plan to make the vehicle both potent and efficient. A 2.5-liter mill with turbochargers could be a solution if they manage to squeeze 250-300 hp from it.
Hybrid and Electric SUV
Nissan will start building electric SUVs pretty soon. The situation is similar to the one we see with General Motors. The Japanese company is not competing with other hybrid crossovers and SUVs. Rogue is pretty efficient, even without it. But, the future Xterra might debut as an all-electric model. We won’t exclude the possibility, especially now after the premier of the Ariya concept. Outputs and range will depend on the size of the battery and the vehicle. The good thing is that the platform is ready and the first units will be available pretty soon.
Redesign and Interior
Not only that engine became inefficient, but the Xterra needed a lot of interior and exterior upgrades to remain competitive. First, on the outside, a more aerodynamic and aesthetic approach is required. Murano succeeded the Xterra, but its look is not as attractive as it should be. On the other hand, radical changes won’t happen.
Inside, the 2024 Nissan Xterra needs to be more practical. When the new model becomes bigger, everything will be very different. After gaining nearly 15 inches, designers will have a lot of room to improve comfort and cargo capacity. The Xterra won’t be a three-row model, that is for sure. Also, for the off-road specialist, this is not necessary. The focus will be on the efficiency and comfort inside, while exterior parts will serve both to lure buyers and be ready for the toughest challenges.
2024 Nissan Xterra Release Date
We expected the comeback of the Xterra when the Terra SUV debuted. But, it was way back in 2018. On the other hand, the nameplate was recently discontinued, so the quick return was not an option. Now, Nissan really needs big upgrades to remain competitive, and the 2024 Nissan Xterra is one of the most anticipated models for the next season. A totally new SUV will have only a few things that will remind us on the old vehicle.
