Turbo engine was one of the best things we had on Forester STI. However, slow sales killed it. We can hear the Japanese company plans to add a turbocharged version to its compact crossover. The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Turbo will stretch the lineup that already has a conventional unit and a hybrid model. We will see if the crossover is going to use the STI badge.

The styling of the 2020 Crosstrek will remind us of Impreza car. Well, these two vehicles share a lot of things in common, including the platform. The Japanese company is using a very interesting concept for their SUVs and crossovers, which also get elements of station wagons. All in all, it seems to be successful, since Subaru is offering a unique design.

Under the bonnet of the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Turbo will be a 2.5-liter engine. The company will combine it with a turbocharger to maximize the outputs. We still don’t have precise numbers and the main reason to believe this is happening is the upcoming redesign of the crossover.

2020 Subaru Crosstrek Turbo Engine and Specs

The new 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Turbo drivetrain is going to be based on a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine. All we know for now is coming from sources close to the company, so these are clear speculations. The base version of the engine is making 180 horsepower. With the help of turbochargers, Crosstrek will get a serious output bump. We believe it could land around 300 hp.

The engine is pairing a CVT transmission and sends power to all wheels. Nevertheless, the manual gearbox is optional and it brings the fun. Turbo units by Subaru have a special place in hearts of its owners, so we believe the Crosstrek Turbo has a good future. Symmetrical AWD is a unique system and engineers are improving it every year. Torque is distributed to each wheel. Estimated top speed is 145 mph and the 2020 Crosstrek Turbo will sprint 0-60 mph in just 5 seconds.

Turbo Engines – Why We Love Them

It is not all about the specs since drivers are in love with the turbo setups by Subaru. Their flat-four drivetrains, also called Boxers, have cylinders on opposite sides. When they work, it looks like two boxers are exchanging punches. The horizontal position of the engine and low center of gravity provide a better handling and overall driving impression.

Furthermore, a turbocharged flat-four unit will accelerate smoother and faster. Vibrations are not as strong as for the classic V engines. The low center of gravity provides other advantages as well, especially on the safety end. During heavy collisions, the engine is hard to push into the cabin, and its low position will make it end under the floor. Well, just take a look at safety ratings of Subaru’s vehicles and everything is going to be clear.

2020 Subaru Crosstrek Turbo Redesign

The base Crosstrek is a model launched in 2017. In the compact segment, things are changing very fast and it is already time for the mid-cycle update. Designers will revisit key parts of the vehicle. The cabin is comfortable for passengers, but it lacks cargo space. Maximum storage room is 55 cubic feet. The new layout is pretty certain. When they change the configuration of seats, we believe new materials will cover front buckets and dashboard. Also, an update of the infotainment system is required.

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Turbo is coming with the great acceleration. However, the high stance will allow this model to go to some off-road adventures. Subaru will increase the ground clearance, which will be around 9 inches. Safety is already at the highest level, so any upgrade is just a bonus. Controls are easy to use and visibility from the driver’s seat is excellent.

Verdict

The existing Crosstrek already rides well. With the turbo engine on the way, we expect the new level of experience. The ride is smooth and comfortable, and the cabin is quiet and spacious. All-wheel drive is standard and abovementioned symmetrical system provides extra grip and traction. Furthermore, the X-Drive system is available as an optional upgrade and engineers will easily install it for the new 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Turbo.

Definitely, there are some lacks of the engines Subaru is using. First of all, the fuel economy is below par. Turbo engine is going to consume even more gas, but it returns more power. Also, if fixes one of the biggest downsides of the Crosstrek – slow acceleration.
