2024 Volvo XC90 and EX90 Reviews

68 0

We expected an all-new model, but it seems the 2024 Volvo XC90 is going to be a carryover. The spotlight is on the all-electric EX90. Well, fans still hope that two SUVs will share the future and the XC90 is coming redesigned, based on its EV sibling. For now, nothing is official. The mid-size luxury SUV debuted in 2015, and the next-generation models should have been out already. But, we will wait a bit longer.

The most recent changes also indicate there won’t be an all-new 2024 Volvo XC90. For example, the company first reshuffled options across trim levels. Then the new lineup of grades debuted. And the 2022 YM introduced new engine configurations. Instead of T5, T6, and T8, now we have B5, B6 and T8 Recharge. Not only names are changed, but drivetrains became more efficient.

So, what makes this SUV so special? Of course, like every Volvo, the XC90 leads the segment in safety. Also, the mid-size SUV is pretty spacious, although the third row is a bit cramped. An all-wheel drive is standard for all configurations. Also, the T8 PHEV now offers an extended range and more power. Nevertheless, don’t expect a bargain.

2024 Volvo XC90 Engines

The new 2024 Volvo XC90 will be available in B5, B6 and T8 Recharge engine setups. All of them are using a 2.0-liter petrol unit as the base. The B5 comes with turbochargers and mild-hybrid system to enhance outputs. This version returns 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. For the mid-size SUV, these numbers are below average. For the luxury class, it becomes even more modest. Not even the gas mileage of 22/28 mpg will fix it.

You can improve the situation with a B6 setup. In this case, engineers squeeze 295 hp from a four-banger. It also adds 310 lb-ft and keeps the gas mileage at a similar level (20/26 mpg). Like said, an all-wheel drive is standard and the powerplant is mated to an 8-pace transmission.

The 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge is previously known as the T8 setup. The plug-in hybrid configuration deploys electric motors as a support. The new version is good for 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque. This makes the XC90 a serious rival to other performance SUVs, such as Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring PHEV. The SUV can also go further by using only electric motors. The range is 36 mpg.

Volvo EX90 – Range, Specs, Release Date

The new SUV is confirmed. The number in the alphanumeric nameplate indicates it will be a close sibling to the 2024 Volvo XC90. But, the EX90 is an all-new project. The Swedish company keeps the promise – soon, their entire fleet will be all-electric. The EX90 is based on the Recharge concept and comes with zero-emission drivetrain.

There will be more than one configuration available. Volvo promised 300 miles in a single charge, but we doubt it will be possible with the base version. Well, it is good for 400 hp, we already know that. A dual-motor configuration adds nearly 100 ponies. Let’s assume this one can go 300 miles between recharges. Even a more potent configuration is possible, the one engineers install on the Polestar 3 SUV.

For now, the company said that base version needs under 6 seconds to hit 0-60 mph, while the performance edition cuts one second. Recharge times are not final yet. Volvo wants to offer quick 10-80 percent recharge in 30 minutes max. Final numbers will be available when the company makes an official debut of the EX90.

2024 Volvo XC90 Grades: Core, Plus, Ultimate

We will miss the R-Design, Momentum and Inscription packages. The company reshuffled options and now we have Core, Plus and Ultimate trim levels. The B5 is not offering the top of the lineup grade. All other combinations are available.

Highlights of the base Core bundle are panoramic sunroof, adaptive headlights, heated front seats, climate control in four zones, and 10-speaker audio. Wheels are 19-inchers, unless you pick the T8 Recharge engine configuration, where 20-inchers are standard. Simulated leather is there for B5 Core, but B6 and T8 engines use genuine leather. Safety is at the top level, as always. Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, traffic signs recognition, and rear automatic brakes are just some of the features from this package.

The XC90 Plus adds headlights washer, leather upholstery, heated second row, and 360-degree camera. The 2024 Volvo XC90 Ultimate comes with 21-inch wheels, genuine leather, crystal transmission knob, Harman Kardon audio, and a few other state-of-art features.

Well, the price of the package with the T8 engine is over $80,000. The base SUV is available from $57,000. It is not too much for a mid-size luxury SUV, but it is expensive having in mind the B5 delivers only 247 hp. Somewhere in the middle you will find a perfect configuration of the new XC90. The electric EX90 will probably cost from $80,000 and reach a six-digit price realm with upgrades.
