Big changes are expected from the upcoming 2024 Volvo XC60. According to multiple sources, such as Motor Authority or Autocar UK, the Swedish company is building an all-new SUV. According to Volvo’s plans, their entire fleet will be electrified soon. The XC60 Recharge is the PHEV model, although the same badge is used for an all-electric XC40. Now, the compact crossover is getting the EV version. The 2024 YM will still use the internal combustion engine, and that will definitely be a 2.0-liter turbo-four unit.
Upgrades under the hood are not the only novelty for the small luxury SUV. The redesign is about to bring a fresh look of the 2024 Volvo XC60. According to early predictions, the crossover will be more wagon-like. The SPA2 platform underpins the prototype, which also shares some other solutions with the Polestar 3 model. The concept can support both EVs and internal combustion powertrains.
What We Know So Far?
Volvo’s intentions are clear – by 2030, the company will sell only EVs. For now, it seems they stick to the plan. But it is still early to drop internal combustion engines from production. The carmaker wants to stay recognizable.
So, the SPA2 platform supports both EV and ICE. The 2024 Volvo XC60 will use old configurations for sure. Some sources say that the sales of EV models won’t start before the 2025 YM. Even the company is not announcing this model yet.
There are a few reasons why Volvo is not dropping ICE yet. First, sales of EVs are still under 10% of overall numbers. The XC60 is the best-seller in the family. So, they risk a lot of money that can be used for future investments. But, stay informed – the carmaker will definitely continue with their plans.
2024 Volvo XC60 Redesign
The new 2024 Volvo XC60 will be fresh outside and inside, while we are waiting for updates under the hood. The redesign is based on the Recharge Concept from 2021. This one brings a more estate look to this compact luxury SUV. Owners will love extra space. We’ll see how it is going to affect the driving experience and what the public thinks about the new look. Anyway, big changes are on the way.
The concept looks too futuristic, so the designers will modify it for the current purposes. Remember, crossovers are not so popular because of their styling, performance, or innovations, but practicality. Well, Volvo has never done a bad job. Expect the new XC60 full of the latest features and accessories. We don’t even have to mention safety. This is the top priority for all Volvo vehicles.
2024 Volvo XC60 Powertrains
The company revisited drivetrains and renamed grades. Now, their configurations are B5, B6 and Recharge. Those are successors of T5, T6 and T8 PHEV. A 2.0-liter internal combustion engine is the main source of power for all of them. The B6 setup can deliver 247 hp and 258 lb-ft thanks to turbochargers and the MHEV system. Front-wheel drive is standard, and it returns 23/30 mpg. If you pick an AWD, the system consumes slightly more gas.
The B6 is an enhanced version of the drivetrain with 295 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is standard here. An 8-speed gearbox sends power from engine to axles. The fuel consumption is increased because of the higher outputs.
The 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge is not an all-electric version, like the XC40. Instead, it replaces an old T8 PHEV model. Not only that, but the Recharge also improves power to 455 hp and torque (523 pound-feet). Since this is a plug-in hybrid, the crossover can use only an electric battery for driving. In this case, you can go 36 miles before recharging. Get use to it, since the new XC60 EV is going to offer at least 250 miles.
Grades and Features
Not only that drivetrains are renamed, but also trim levels. Momentum, R-Design and Inscription are the histories now. The B5 Core is the entry-level version with a price tag just under $45,000. Here are a few highlights: 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, heated front seats… Some of those features are available at higher grades of some other crossover, even from the luxury world.
The 2024 Volvo XC60 Plus is a mid-range offer with dark and light themes. Both are using leather upholstery, 19-inch wheels, ambient lighting, a 360-degree camera and an IntelliSafe Assist system. Ultimate models deliver state-of-art options, such as four-zone automatic climate control, crystal gear selector knob, premium leather upholstery, Harman Kardon audio and HUD. The only package that tops that is the Polestar Engineered, available only for the Recharge model. Sport-tuned suspension, performance tires wrapping a set of 21-inch wheels, adjustable dampers, Brembo brakes with unique gold-painted calipers, and Bowers & Wilkins premium audio makes this version so special. Also the price, since there are no too many compact crossovers priced $80,000.
