We saw a few interesting changes on the Durango SUV in the past two seasons. Those kept the Dodge model alive and gave us hope that the all-new version is coming soon. Rumors even mention moving to the body-on-frame architecture, to separate the competition from the Jeep Grand Cherokee. But now, with the Grand Wagoneer out as the BoF model, the new 2024 Dodge Durango will continue to be the unibody SUV.
That is just the beginning of speculations about the next-gen Durango. The fact is that sales are dropping and the vehicle is pretty old. The third generation of the SUV debuted in 2011. There were several updates, but the all-new platform is required to stay competitive. But, if the 2024 Durango remains unchanged, then the future of the nameplate is under question mark.
The company recently revived the lineup by bringing in the Hellcat engine. Durango became the most powerful SUV in the market. However, the joy didn’t last, since the following model didn’t offer the mighty configuration. The all-new 2024 Dodge Durango might bring it back, as the top SRT package.
The 2024 Dodge Durango should definitely bring big changes to survive. The mid-size three-row SUV segment is pretty popular nowadays. The versatility of those model draw more buyers. You can travel with a family, tow, or go off the road. The performance in urban areas is not the best, mainly because of the high fuel consumption.
Anyway, the styling is old, outside and inside. So, the redesign is the priority. Also, stories about the new architecture are interesting. Fans would like to see the Durango on the ladder frame and in a combination with the Hellcat engine. Still, hybridization and electrification might happen more likely. FCA needs to catch up with the competition. Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the first step. In 2024, hybrid and PHEV systems will be available on more vehicles.
Which are the Best Versions?
The offer will start again with the 2024 Dodge Durango SXT. This is the entry-level model with some advanced options. Still, the company won’t offer too much, leaving most of the upgrades for upper trim levels. Nevertheless, the SXT will continue to use a V6 engine as the base choice.
A 3.6-liter mill is also the power source for the GT lineup. From the base package, you can derive a few more configurations. The 2024 Dodge Durango GT Blacktop is a unique package with darkened parts and details, including wheels, lower fascia and side mirrors. GT Plus makes the interior cozier with leather seats and a larger infotainment screen.
The R/T is also coming back with the next-gen SUV. The main upgrade is a V8 engine. Still, we’ll see what options Dodge is going to offer in this case and if there is a hybrid model coming out with the 2024 YM. Like the GT, the R/T also comes with some optional packages. For the new season, the company will prepare fresh configurations.
Engines, Specs, Hybrid
A V6 is an entry-level engine and a pretty reliable unit. The ‘Pentastar’ configuration should be carried over with 293-295 hp, depending on the package. Also, it seems like the perfect engine to be enhanced with electric motors. Still, this one is yet to be announced.
Meanwhile, a V8 is one of the reasons why we love Durango. The SUV offers a 5.7-liter engine with 360 hp and 390 lb-ft for the mid-range models, such as R/T. The powertrain is also optional for the GT version. High fuel consumption is the cost the SUV pays for extra power.
2024 Dodge Durango: SRT vs Trackhawk
The real deal is coming with the 2024 Dodge Durango SRT. FCA offered this badge with Jeep Grand Cherokee for a limited time. It is again exclusive to the Dodge family. The highlight of the SRT model is a 6.4-liter Hemi engine with 475 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is standard. To handle such big power outputs, engineers had to add Brembo brakes, a special suspension setup, limited-slip differential and performance tires. The Blacktop package was available with the SRT model, not only the GT.
There was one even more impressive configuration available for the SUV. But, the company discontinued the supercharged V8 engine after just one year in the market. It was enough to draw attention, but that can last forever. The 2024 Dodge Durango Hellcat comeback is almost certain. A 6.2-liter engine can deliver 710 hp. That is 3 horsepower more than Jeep Grand Cherokee can do with the same drivetrain.
2024 Dodge Durango Release Date
Expectations are huge and the 2024 Dodge Durango needs to meet the demands. It is probably the last chance to impress the public. If the company fails to deliver an eye-catching vehicle, then we can talk about the discontinuation of the legendary nameplate. More will be known when the Durango officially debuts. That won’t happen before summer.
