After Cayenne, the German premium carmaker decided to deliver a smaller and more affordable crossover. Macan found the way to the hearts of buyers pretty quickly and the company is now preparing a new generation. Still, it is coming as 2022 YM, probably with the electric motor. Meanwhile, the 2021 Porsche Macan is not bringing any major changes. Well, it doesn’t need them, since there are already four different configurations and even the most demanding buyers can be satisfied with the offer.
If we must look for downsides, the price is one of the rare things we don’t like. Even the base offer starts above $50,000 while the high-end versions end up in a six-digit price realm. On the other hand, how many compact crossovers will return 435 horsepower and some of the most advanced technologies in the market?
Porsche is more focused on the larger Cayenne SUV. Nevertheless, engineers are also working on the new 2021 Porsche Macan. Its large brother will get a new Turbo GTS version, while the small crossover will be oriented to greener sources of power.
2021 Porsche Macan Specs
The 2021 Porsche Macan is a compact crossover. But the luxury segment requires higher outputs than we got used to from such vehicles. Of course, German engineers are ready for this. The base version of the Macan will offer 250 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque from a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. A 7-speed PDK (Doppel Kupplungs getriebe) is sending power to all wheels. These configurations are standard for all other engines and setups. High outputs have their cost – low gas mileage. The base version returns only 21 mpg combined.
The Macan S raises the bar with a 3.0-liter V6 engine. Again, turbochargers are taking care of the outputs, which are now at 350 hp and 355 lb-ft. The good thing about the S version is that fuel consumption remains the same as for the inline-four unit.
A couple of high-end models will use a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine to maximize the power of the compact luxury crossover. The 2021 Porsche Macan GTS will deliver 375 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Again, the fuel economy is not sacrificed, offering 17/22 mpg. Finally, the twin-turbo system can squeeze 435 ponies and 405 pound-feet of twisting power. The Macan Turbo needs just 4 seconds to sprint to 60 mph from zero.
Macan is Getting All-Electric Version in 2022
Since the model for the 2021 season is unchanged, the upgrades for the following editions are more than exciting. Engineers are working on the all-new unit, and this time, it will be an electric motor. The 2022 Macan will become the EV, according to Car Magazine. Chiefs were speaking about this model before, but now we have the first details about the platform. Porsche will build Macan EV on the MLB Evo architecture, and the crossover will cover at least 250 miles in a single charge. This is going to be another step in the evolution of Porsche crossovers and SUVs after Cayenne got E-Hybrid and the Turbo GT model.
Competition
The 2021 Porsche Macan is so good that we can’t find a match to the luxury crossover. The base version is not so special if you look at performance. Nevertheless, high-end models are making a difference. There is no too many crossovers returning 435 ponies. Well, the biggest rivals are coming also from Germany. AMG version of the Mercedes GLC and performance-oriented BMW X3M and X4M are able to match Macan’s outputs. Again, styling and attention to detail are again putting Porsche above all other vehicles. For now, other exotic carmakers are not in the compact segment.
2021 Porsche Macan Prices
The base price is going to put the 2021 Porsche Macan out of the reach for most buyers. Even some premium seven-seaters are available under $50,000 and the compact crossover starts at $51,000. Every next edition adds more features and power. Shown in pricing, that is $10k for the Macan S, $20k for GTS, and $30k for Turbo. Add some optional features, and the vehicle jumps over $100,000 mark. There are no too many crossover and SUVs in the market with a six-digit price, especially not so small.
