A model for the 2020 season is out with the minor facelift. The Bavarian company is not spending too much time and funds for it since the 2021 BMW X1 is going to be an all-new crossover. German media already has exclusive information. Auto Bild is the first one to announce changes to the subcompact vehicle.
The update says the next-gen model is coming as the all-new model for the 2021 season. The upcoming X1 is going to be based on its larger SUV brothers X3 and X5. These two models suffered were redesigned recently, and their offer is already recognized in the US market. The 2021 BMW X1 won’t grow significantly. The platform is new, but designers could add less than the centimeter.
The more essential updates are inside the cabin. A total overhaul is on the way, with “Hey BMW” voice control. The touchscreen display will be at the center console, and the company eliminates some switches and buttons from the cockpit. The new FAAR architecture is going to exploit front-wheel drive. The sDrive18i is the only certain drivetrain at this point. We expect more updates from the BMW USA.
New 2021 BMW X1 Will Also Hit US Showrooms
Besides the articles in German, we found no proofs of 2021 BMW X1 for the US market. Well, there are no big differences between this and the European version for the current generation. Of course, there are particular drivetrains available on both ends of the Atlantic Ocean. But, the new X1 could get more electric power in the US. After the release of X7 full-size SUV, the subcompact crossover becomes the priority for the Bavarian carmaker.
Engines, Hybrid
As the German press says, the new 2021 BMW X1 will use the sDrive18i. A 1.5-liter inline-three engine can produce 140 hp and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque. Max speed The subcompact model can achieve is 200 kmh (125 mph). The sDrive means the power is going to two wheels (front axle). All-wheel drive configurations in BMW’s family carry the xDrive badge. There is a similar diesel drivetrain available for the X1. The amount of torque coming from a 1.5-l displacement is the same, and the power is reduced to 116 hp.
In the US, the company will probably keep a 2.0-liter turbo engine and its high outputs. However, engineers could tune it to add some extra power. At this moment, the crossover gains 228 hp and 258 lb-ft. The sDrive28i configuration is the base one, while the US buyers can also purchase the xDrive AWD model.
The xDrive25e should hit the market in 2020. The company is again late with an appearance in the US. A new configuration combines a 1.5-liter turbo engine with an electric source of power. This is a pair good for 217 hp and 284 lb-ft. According to the official announcement, the max speed of the new PHEV crossover is 120 mph, and the X1 can hit 60 mph in 7 seconds (conventional engine is faster). That’s not all. The 2021 BMW X1 hybrid can go by using electric power only. The range of this mode is 31 miles. Its main rival is Mini Cooper S E Countryman plug-in hybrid. But, BMW beats the opponent’s range by nearly 20 miles!

We also want to know if the 2021 BMW X1 M Sport is going to appear after the redesign. The package includes attractive cosmetic upgrades. Sadly, BMW is not tuning the drivetrain system. Inside the cabin, buyers are getting sport buckets, special steering wheel with paddle shifters, and the panoramic moonroof.
Dimensions Will Be Unchanged
The new 2021 BMW X1 is based on the FAAR concept. This architecture is lighter than the previous UKL platform. It also allows vehicles to use electric motors as the source of power. However, it is available only for models whose engines are sending energy to the front axle.
But, the new platform is not going to affect the overall dimensions of the crossover. The X1 remains the subcompact model, and it could be less than an inch longer than now. The vehicle is 175 inches long, with a 105-in wheelbase.
2021 BMW X1 USA Release Date
We are still expecting the news about the PHEV model for the US. It will be available in Europe for the 2020 season. However, this one is not coming straight to the United States. It could be one of the updates for the next-gen 2021 BMW X1.
The crossover will arrive late in 2020. At this point, we have only an announcement by Auto Bild. And this is the news for the German market. Still, the Bavarian carmaker achieves the best results in the US, so the new model will be available soon after the premiere in its homeland.
