The new generation of the small SUV is on the way and it arrives as the 2024 BMW X3. We knew this was coming, but now it is official. Spy photos of test mules are already available. However, those won’t unveil too many details yet. There is about 12 more months until the company starts selling the compact luxury crossover. Until then, small pieces of information will be unveiled, piece by piece. So, let’s check what we know about the X3 in the early stages of its release.
A few things are certain. First of all, BMW looks special at the X3 for the 20th anniversary of its appearance. Three generations are behind us, and the compact luxury crossover has never disappointed fans of the Bavarian carmaker. Now, it is coming fully redesigned. Test mules are under the heavy camo.
But, what is going on under the hood is still a mystery. The new 2024 BMW X3 is being tested at Nurburgring, but it is unknown which version. It is definitely not the iX3 all-electric SUV. But, it might be a plug-in hybrid or the X3M. Choices are wide, and a high-performance model is one of the most powerful in the SUV world.
2024 BMW X3 LCI
The 2024 BMW X3 will be all-new, that is for sure. The current, third generation is in the market since 2017, and it is time for the Life Cycle Impulse or the LCI. It is the refresh of the vehicle that brings many updates. The LCI breathes new life, although the popularity of the X3 is not reclining. The small SUV is modern, powerful, and comfortable. The upcoming version could take everything to a whole new level.
BMW recently updated the infotainment system. Now, their vehicles are competitive again, although Audi MMI on Q5 and Mercedes MBUX on GLC are strong rivals. The new design of the interior is also important to provide more room. Well, the fresh look is also always welcome.
Engines Lineup is Still Unknown
The luxury crossover offers three different configurations on the current edition. We believe all of them are coming back. Updates of power outputs are the only change on those models. The only novelty could be the iX3. But, an all-electric vehicle is considered as a totally different lineup. It will be a compact luxury crossover, but with a unique platform and special features and systems.
A 2.0-liter remains an entry-level option. Even unchanged, it puts out respectable numbers – 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive and xDrive AWD is optional for the compact SUV. A six-pot unit is available for two models. The M40i is now a plug-in hybrid. Although some experts didn’t assume this kind of drivetrain is coming back, it will be out. Some of the spy photos are showing the test mules in Nurburgring. Again, an unchanged model can make a statement with 382 horsepower and 370 lb-ft. Plus, a V6 can do 21/26 mpg. Not so great for a compact crossover, but excellent numbers for a vehicle with a six-pot engine.
2024 BMW X3 M Package
The small SUV blows the competition away with the M model. A 3.0-liter I66 is turbocharged and creates 473 horsepower. Plus, it adds 547 lb-ft of torque. But, that is not all. The Competition package is taking the game to another level with 503 hp and 479 lb-ft. Such configuration makes the 2024 BMW X3M accelerate 0-60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. Even the base version is achieving stunning result at 4 sec. Still, the price is something that should bother fans. After the redesign, the MSRP won’t be under $75,000.
Spy Photos and Changes
Everything about the 2024 BMW X3 is still blurry. We know the company is not changing some things. But, spy photos are making everyone wonder – what is under the heavy camo? It looks like the dimensions are the same and the grille seems bigger. Updated headlights and bumper will complete the facelift.
One portion of the spy photos is showing the PHEV version. We can spot the opening above the wheels, meaning the company is not dropping this version to make more room for the iX3. The plug-in hybrid manages to take the crossover up to 18 miles by using only an electric battery. An all-electric BMW iX3 is going to cover 285 miles in a single charge. Also, the autonomous drive system will be at higher levels than any BMW before it. We doubt the SUV will keep the price of around $75,000 when it hits US dealerships. BMW wants to be competitive, and there are plenty of more affordable options.
More details will be unveiled in the next few months. The vehicle is being tested, which means the development is in the advanced stages. The 2024 BMW X3 was caught testing more than once, so engineers are probably tuning the drivetrain system to perfection. Expect big things from the upcoming compact luxury crossover SUV.
