Terrain might be the smallest SUV in the GMC’s lineup, but it is the best-seller among its siblings. The compact crossover class is the most popular and the vehicle takes advantage of its upscale styling and interior. The refresh was ready for this season, but General Motors postponed release dates for the next year. So, the vehicle is going to appear as the 2022 GMC Terrain, with new features and styling.
It is still a question if the company is going to keep all the updates presented early in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic spread all over the world. The changes included for the delayed 2021 YM were front fascia and headlights inspired by the all-new Yukon and AT4 trim. There are a few other notable updates as well. The competition is more than tough and the 2022 GMC Terrain will have a tough task to find suitors without a hybrid engine. Having in mind the GM is in the big electrification process, the 2022 lineup might bring a hybrid crossover. Leaders in this class are already above 40 mpg thanks to such configuration.
Changes for the 2022 GMC Terrain
If everything stays the same, the new vehicle will come with a fresh front fascia. Also, the rear end will be inspired by the new Yukon, making the 2022 GMC Terrain a mini version of the full-size SUV. Color palette is revisited and now we have a new lineup of paints. Inside, small updates make the cabin similar to the previous edition. Materials at higher trim levels are upscaled. Top of the class is the Denali model with some luxurious equipment. Still, if you need a premium crossover, Cadillac will offer the all-new XT4.
This is going to be all for this facelift, while the new generation is not planned yet.
2022 GMC Terrain Engines and Specs
Under the bonnet of the 2022 GMC Terrain, we see no changes. There is a couple of turbocharged units, which make the crossover very competitive. Still, one piece is missing –a hybrid unit. Nowadays, compact SUVs are adding such setups to enhance both power outputs and gas mileage. Although the Terrain owners can count on the fuel-friendly outputs, these values are very bad compared to hybrid versions of Toyota Rav4, or Ford Escape.
The entry-level solution is a 1.5-liter turbo-four, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Well, the GM could install a newer gearbox for a smoother ride. Still, the base setup is pretty potent with 203 lb-ft. Most compact crossovers stay under 200 pound-feet. If you think the extra twist power is going to affect the fuel economy rating, you are wrong. The engine also creates 170 hp and returns 30 mpg on highways. Combined, the front-wheel drive Terrain will do 27 mpg. All-wheel drive reduces the mileage to 26 miles per gallon.
The optional drivetrain is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pot engine with 252 horsepower. This is the level of luxury German crossovers. Instead of a six-pace case, the 2022 GMC Terrain will get a nine-speed gearbox. Automatic start/stop switch was standard, but you will be able to switch it off on the 2022 GMC Terrain.
Hybrid Unit is Planned for 2023
Even the 2022 update might make the Terrain Hybrid available for purchase. However, it is questionable, since GM has other plans. We don’t think the crossover is going hybrid in the next 12 months and the first such unit would be available in 2023. In 2022, General Motors is going to deliver the first electric vehicles. Hybrids are not the priority for now. Still, fans won’t wait for too long until GM’s “Our electric future is now” affects the Terrain lineup.
2022 GMC Terrain Models
The base version of the crossover is the 2022 GMC Terrain SL. The company updated the offer and now the most popular smartphone integration services are available right from the bottom trim. Pro Safety is included, as well as 17-inch wheels. The SLE will add special colors, a self-dimming rearview mirror and a 2.0-liter engine become an optional drivetrain. You can also add an all-wheel drive. The SLT is a premium model with leather seats with a heating function, a power tailgate, and a larger touchscreen display.
The top of the class version is the 2022 GMC Terrain Denali. Well, we know that, since most vehicles with this badge are available with this package at the high-end. Highlights of this trim are 19-inch wheels, LED lights, and an advanced safety system. We might see the Super Cruise semi-autonomous drive, while the standard features are parking sensors and blind-spot monitors.
When Will 2022 GMC Terrain be Available?
The new crossover already had a premiere. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, General Motors had to postpone the debut. The vehicle is coming as the 2022 GMC Terrain, which is clear for some while. According to GM Authority, the sales will start later this year.
