Ready for the Comeback: 2021 Ford Excursion

A 7.3-liter engine is here. It would be the perfect match for an old nameplate. The 2021 Ford Excursion is the truck-based SUV. But, not an ordinary pickup is underpinning this vehicle. The Excursion takes the same platform as the F-250 Super Duty truck. With such architecture, the comeback of the SUV threatens the rest of the segment in many ways – especially towing capability and utility. However, everything is still just a far-fetched story, since the company didn’t make it clear if the heavy-duty Excursion is coming back after 15 years.

The 2021 Ford Excursion is not confirmed yet, but it is obvious that we are talking about the most capable SUV in the world. Expedition is the class-leader with 9,300 pounds of towing capacity. This number will go up when a diesel unit appears. But, a 7.3-liter V8 petrol drivetrain is also a reasonable choice that will boost the performance of the upcoming SUV. Excursion is going to be larger than the Expedition Max, which also means more interior space for passengers and the cargo.

Bad things about the project is a high cost of ownership. First of all, the price will be more expensive than for all full-size models. Plus, there are maintenance costs and poor fuel economy numbers.

2021 Ford Excursion Engines and Specs

Last time when it was in the market, the Excursion used popular Triton engines. However, these are not available anymore. Plus, the monster SUV had a couple of turbodiesel powerplants, which are also dropped and replaced. Having in mind the nature of its predecessors, we can figure out which drivetrains the 2021 Ford Excursion could use.

Expedition is one of the rare full-size models with a twin-turbo V6 engine under the hood. The heavy-duty model will require V8 and there are a couple of possibilities there. A new 7.3-liter is the most likely option. With 430 hp, it can produce more energy than its predecessor. Still, a 6.2-liter displacement remains an option, but it is less likely to happen.

Besides 430 hp, the 7.3 unit can produce 475 lb-ft of torque. Towing capacity will depend on a few things and the 2021 Ford Excursion will be able to run on RWD and AWD modes. We believe the new unit will help this SUV offer at least 10,000 lbs.

Diesel Powertrains

The 2021 Ford Excursion will be more interesting when it comes to diesel options. The Blue Oval company recently launched a 3.0-liter engine. The Powerstroke unit is ready to produce 250 hp and 450 lb-ft for 11,500 pounds of towing capacity for Ford F-150. But, the SUV will be based on a larger truck. The F-250 is using more serious equipment that will boost the hauling capability to 20,000 pounds. A 6.7-liter Powerstroke engine is ready to burst 450 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. A ten-speed automatic gearbox is standard and forwards power to rear wheels.

None. No other companies could compete with the 2021 Ford Excursion. The only possible rival is coming as an interesting concept by FCA. Ram Ramcharger is also the platform based on the heavy-duty truck. The FCA is a serious competitor to F-250. The third company involved in the HD truck segment, Chevrolet, has no intention to create the SUV larger than Suburban.

Full-size SUVs are not the most popular vehicles in the market, mainly because of their price. Still, many buyers love to get extra space. These are more comfortable for larger families. The 2021 Ford Excursion would provide even more room, especially for passengers. SUVs with 200 inches of length usually come with a tight rear row. The Excursion will add at least 30 inches, which is more than enough for space gain in all rows. Plus, the cargo will have enough space for a big load.

The performance of the heavy-duty model will be rough. It is suitable for a tough situations, work, or off-road ride. But, you will see a lot of problems in urban areas. Increased fuel consumption and oversized body are the major factors why this is the SUV for the countryside and outskirts.

It is also questionable what kind of trim levels the 2021 Ford Excursion is going to get. Compared to the Expedition, we can say the King Ranch and FX4 are the best options for the upcoming model. Of course, there will be lighter entry-level packages, and probably high-end Platinum or Limited versions, reaching the luxury realm.

When Will 2021 Ford Excursion be Available?

The company launched the new generation of its heavy-duty trucks. The Blue Oval carmaker could use the swing and add another heavy-duty model to its portfolio. All about the new 2021 Ford Excursion is still speculation. But, with the growth of the SUV segment, no one is going to be surprised if the manufacturer steps into a new market. The race in this profitable industry never stops and innovations are making Ford a leader.
