Three-row SUVs can offer seven or eight seating spots, while nine-seaters are discontinued. An additional bench will cut some cargo space, but it can be turned into storage when seats are folded. Perfect for larger families, these models will offer enough room for long trips. Most of the vehicles we are going to mention will use V6 units. Still, that is not necessary, since we can find models with four-pot engines at dealerships. The most powerful versions will use V8s.

Mid- and full-size SUVs are available with an extra row and two additional spaces. There are a few new players in the market, while the biggest addition is expected by Jeep. Grand Cherokee is not getting the bench behind the second row, but the company is about to bring back an old nameplate.

2021 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

The FCA announced the arrival of the Grand Wagoneer some while ago as 2021 YM. The first spy photos appeared, but we didn’t find out too much. With the COVID-19 outburst, it is questionable if the carmaker will go through with this project. Nevertheless, the 2021 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is about to take the position above the Grand Cherokee, as the full-size SUV with three rows. Who knows, it can be an eight-seater as well. Some rumors are speculating about the Wagonner being a standard full-size model, and Grand Wagoneer an extended version, like Ford Expedition Max or Chevy Suburban. V8 engines are certain, with 5.7-liter displacement being a base solution and 6.4-l optional. The 2021 Jeep Grand Wagoneer could get even the powerful Hellcat mill with 700+ horsepower.

2021 Dodge Durango

The FCA is already producing the SUV with three rows. Nevertheless, the 2021 Dodge Durango is an eight-seater in its base form. It is a bit tight in two rear benches, but it can be solved by turning the middle row into a couple of captain’s chairs. The biggest update for the 2021 Dodge Durango is the abovementioned Hellcat engine. The SRT will now produce 710 hp and become more powerful than the Grand Cherokee (creates 707 ponies).

There are plenty of other options for the mid-size seven-seat SUV. The SRT model previously used a 6.4-liter engine. It will be back since the FCA is making this badge unavailable for Jeep models. There, the performance versions will be offered as Trackhawk. The base 2021 Dodge Durango is getting power from a 3.6-liter V6.

2021 Toyota Highlander

For a long time, the Highlander was the only three-row SUV with a hybrid powertrain. Now, more of these vehicles are in the market. But, the 2021 Toyota Highlander will offer something special – the PHEV model. The Japanese company already did it with a smaller Rav4. A standard hybrid makes the 2021 Highlander the most efficient SUV in the class, with 35 mpg. A previous version based on a V6 is replaced with a system whose center of power is a four-banger. Engineers sacrificed power to gain better gas mileage. Still, the Highlander hybrid can produce 245 hp.

The base form of the seven-seat SUV is using a 3.5-liter engine. With 290 hp and 265 lb-ft, it produces enough power for a convenient and comfortable ride. Highlander is one of the best-selling models in the segment and we expect the same from the 2021 Toyota Highlander.

2021 Honda Pilot

The 2021 Honda Pilot came without too many changes, although we expected a full redesign. The last time when the Japanese company did the update, the sales and popularity jumped significantly. It seems like the 2022 YM will get the redesign. Meanwhile, the 2021 Honda Pilot will remain one of the most reliable three-row SUVs. A seven-seat version is available when you pick captain’s chairs in the middle row. The third row is cramped and it is one of the major downsides of the vehicle. Under the hood is still a 3.5-liter V6. Honda has no bigger engine to offer, but 280 hp and 260 lb-ft are more than enough for the mid-size three-row SUV. Touring and Elite are the high-end trims with the most features the Japanese company is offering.

2021 Subaru Ascent

Another carmaker from Japan is climbing up the hierarchy in the SUV segment. Subaru is now in the market with a new model. The 2021 Ascent is a seven-seater. Well, this is the first model in the list with a four-cylinder engine. As you probably know, the manufacturer is using a flat-four configuration, also called Boxer engine. A 2.4-liter turbocharged unit is delivering 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. The 2021 Subaru Ascent, like its siblings, is sending power to all wheels and returns 21/27 mpg. The base price of the seven-seat SUV is $33,000 and goes up with premium packages.

2021 Ford Expedition

The 2021 Ford Expedition is a full-size SUV. The Blue Oval carmaker recently redesigned this model and the change was fruitful, according to sales numbers. The large model is not using a V8, which is quite a surprise. Still, a mighty twin-turbo V6 can deliver 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. What’s more, the 2021 Expedition will still be the best in class SUV for towing, offering 9,300 pounds. The base model is coming with eight seats, but you can downgrade it to a seven-seater. The full-size model will be offered from $53,000. With all seats folded, the cargo space climbs up to 105 cu.ft. If you need more, the 2021 Ford Expedition Max is the LWB model with extra 20 cubic feet behind the front row.

2021 Chevy Tahoe

The 2021 Chevy Tahoe will be the main rival to Expedition. It is entering the new generation with plenty of updates. The major one is the independent rear suspension, which is finally available with GM’s big rigs. The extended version is Suburban, and it offers pretty much the same options like Tahoe.

The High Country is top of the range model with premium features. The new generation upgrades every trim level with extra equipment. If you need more space for loading stuff, then the Suburban is a better choice. Again, both SUVs are eight-seaters by default. General Motors uses the same layout even for a smaller Traverse.

2021 Nissan Pathfinder

Next in our list is Nissan’s mid-size model, Pathfinder. Well, the 2021 season won’t bring changes we would like to see. The large SUV will be redesigned in 2022. Under the bonnet stays a 3.5-liter V6 engine. The vehicle is definitely getting a hybrid powertrain, but after the update. Without modifications, the price will stay the same, as well as trim levels. So, the MSRP starts at $32,000 for the S model. SL and SV are optional packages, and the last one also offers the special Rock Creek edition.

Some of the reasons why you need to consider the 2021 Nissan Pathfinder as a good buy are a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds, comfortable cabin, and advanced infotainment NissanConnect multimedia. Safety Shield 360 is standard, while the SUV also offers the most advanced self-driving equipment in this class.

2021 Kia Telluride

The 2021 Kia Telluride will be one of the new models in the market. The Korean company is growing, and the 2021 Kia Telluride is developed alongside Hyundai Palisade. The two vehicles share a few things in common. The first impressions say that manufacturer did a great job. The new interior looks nice and the price is more than attractive. The cabin is quiet and comfortable, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard features. Also, like all Kia vehicles, the 2021 Telluride will have a seven-year coverage.

Still, a couple of things could be better. For example, a V6 engine comes with 260 lb-ft of torque, which must be improved for the 3.8-liter unit. Transmission and the response are slow. Upper trim levels don’t offer hill descent control. It makes an off-roading questionable.

2021 Hyundai Palisade

A close sibling of Kia Telluride is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade. Another Korean company is a step ahead with the premium SUV in the lineup, Genesis GV80. The mid-size seven-seat non-premium model is also pretty attractive with bold styling and plenty of room. Three rows will come with eight spots and one is cut by selecting captain’s chairs. The same drivetrain is used by Kia and it creates 290 hp. Fuel economy is pretty good with 22 mpg combined.

Hyundai should work on the additional options under the hood. A turbo-four might provide enough power and improve the fuel economy. The 2021 Hyundai Palisade won’t bring too many new options we haven’t already seen on other vehicles from this company. Also, the styling is not too aesthetic with a high hood and flat roof.

2021 Mazda CX-9

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is the largest model by the Japanese carmaker. If it gets bigger, it will become a full-size SUV. The CX-9 will soon get a hybrid engine. Nevertheless, the vehicle is one of the rare models that uses a four-cylinder unit. With the premium fuel, a 2.5-liter turbo-four delivers 250 hp. Still, if you fill regular gasoline, the unit will create only 227 hp. It is not competitive for this class.

On the other hand, handsome styling will draw attention. The interior is on the verge of becoming a premium model. Still, Mazda is not a luxury manufacturer, although there are many advanced features. Signature trim level will offer the most of these. For the 2021 Mazda CX-9, the company makes a 10-inch screen standard. The carbon edition package is added as a special upgrade for the Grand Touring model. Safety is one of the best in the segment.

2021 GMC Acadia

The 2021 GMC Acadia is another seven-seat SUV by General Motors. The US company also produces a few luxury models. The 2021 GMC Acadia is a mechanical twin of the Chevy Traverse. Nevertheless, there are only seven seats in all models, while the Chevrolet SUV starts the offer with eight. If you select the 2021 GMC Acadia AT4, the off-road SUV is available with two rows only.

Under the hood of the 2021 GMC Acadia is a V6 engine with 310 horsepower. Besides the off-road AT4, there is also a luxury Denali package with the most advanced equipment in the lineup. Optionally, the SUV can run by using power from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder drivetrain. Front-wheel drive is standard, although many fans expected the RWD.
