The 2021 Ford Expedition will come unchanged for the upcoming season. The big SUV is still relatively new (the current generation debuted in 2018). Also, the COVID-19 pandemic hit the car industry very hard, so big deals are not going to happen. Well, Chevrolet is bringing the next-gen Tahoe and Suburban, but these big rigs are catching up with Ford. From now on, these two will use the independent rear suspension, something Expedition has been exploiting for more than ten years.
The biggest question is if the company is bringing the diesel engine to the lineup? A V6 petrol unit is not something we meet every day in the full-size class. Most rivals are using V8 power. Nevertheless, the SUV will get enough juice from the twin-turbo unit, even for its long-wheelbase 2021 Ford Expedition MAX version. It adds more than 10 inches in overall length and a lot of cargo space. Four trim levels are part of the lineup and Ford is going to offer some special upgrades and packages outside the standard configurations.
2021 Ford Expedition MAX, Interior
The standard SUV is 210 inches long with a 122-inch wheelbase. The interior layout offers eight seating spots and 21 cubic feet behind the rear row. You can fold it and get 42 cu.ft. more. The maximum cargo space of the standard edition is 105 cubic feet. The 2021 Ford Expedition MAX is 222 inches long and adds 9 more inches between axles. Converted to cargo space, it is 36 cu.ft. behind the third row, 80 cubic feet when it is folded, and up to 122 cubic feet with only front buckets up.
The Ford Expedition is the best hauler in the full-size class. You can load 9,300 pounds for the RWD and the towing capacity drops by 300 lbs if you are driving the AWD model. The MAX edition is also pretty potent, with 9,000/8,700 pounds of towing capacity for RWD/AWD.
Which 2021 Ford Expedition is the Best? [Trim Levels and Accessories]
The 2021 Ford Expedition is offering plenty of options. The entry-level SUV comes with the XLT package. Highlights of this model are 18-inch wheels outside, and superb infotainment system inside the vehicle. Still, an 8-inch display seems a bit small for the full-size SUV. Expedition is an eight-seater by default. Optional packages for the XLT model are off-road FX4 if you are about to enhance the performance, or Black Accent if you want your ride look more appealing.
When you see a 20-inch wheels set, that is the sign of the Limited edition. More upscale materials are inside, and Ford enhances audio system with more speakers. The 2021 Ford Expedition King Ranch is our pick as the best model in the lineup. It comes with leather upholstery and unique stitches. Larger wheels and special suspension setup improve the driving impression.
The Platinum package comes with even more features, but it is also more expensive. First of all, engineers squeeze some more power from a V6 engine for this edition. Plus, the company didn’t spare on premium materials. The Expedition Platinum is a luxury package, and its price proves that.
Diesel Engine Might Improve Towing Capacity
The SUV is getting power from a 3.5-liter petrol engine. All the rivals – GM models, Nissan Armada, and Toyota Sequoia, are using a V8 as the base configuration. Nevertheless, the twin-turbo setup is powerful enough to match outputs and performances of larger displacements. For the Expedition, engineers are tuning the engine to deliver 375 horsepower. Platinum edition comes with 400 hp. In the future, we might see the SUV with even more ponies, since the same engine sometimes delivers 450 hp (Lincoln Navigator, F-150 Raptor). A 10-speed automatic is standard and sends power to the rear axle or all four corners.
The carmaker is considering adding another option for its larger SUV. The 2021 Ford Expedition Diesel is not confirmed yet, but it is likely to happen since General Motors already made the move. The Powerstroke unit is a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine with 260 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. It makes the F-150 Diesel the most capable full-size truck for towing, offering 11,600 pounds. The SUV won’t need so much potential and the Expedition is already the best in the class when it comes to towing capacity. Well, a boost is expected and the SUV could offer more than 10,000 pounds.
The base XLT model costs just under $53,000. The FX4 off-road package adds $1,650, but it requires additional choices, such as a 4×4 drive. With all these features, the price goes up to $60,000. Still, it is $3,000 under the next package, Limited. King Ranch is our choice, but it still requires a serious investment. The MSRP starts at $73,000 and the 2021 Ford Expedition Platinum model costs similar. We don’t have estimations of the price for the diesel engine and which options it is going to offer.
