Mazda made a few small updates on its largest SUV. The CX-9 is ready for the redesign, outside and inside. There are also big expectations about the hybrid or electric version. Smaller CX-5 and CX-3 could turn into CX-50 and CX-30. Still, we don’t have info about the CX-90. The 2022 Mazda CX-9 is underperforming in the mid-size class with the 2.5-liter engine and 225 hp. The SkyActiv technology leads the segment with a superb fuel economy.
Although there are no options under the bonnet, the CX-9 is offering plenty of build choices. Four trim levels will be there again. The latest model introduced the Carbon Edition with some cool stuff inside and outside. The redesign makes the question mark above it and how the new features are going to fit with the all-new 2022 Mazda CX-9.
The Japanese carmaker will try to keep all the good stuff that make the CX-9 so popular. The interior is nearly as luxurious as some premium models. the turbocharged engine is not offering high-outputs, but the handling and driving impression are very cool. On the other hand, this 200-inch long SUV is not as spacious as you might expect, especially in the third row. If you need a lot of towing capacity, the CX-9 is not the best choice with 3,500 lbs. Also, the cargo space is very limited on the three-row versions.
2022 Mazda CX-9 Options
You can be sure Mazda is keeping its poker of trim levels after the redesign of the mid-size SUV. Well, the styling and equipment are making their vehicles so special. The revisit is going to introduce the fresh look, in and out. Also, the interior is going to bring a new layout, more accessories across the lineup, as well as better safety features.
Sport and Touring Models
The base version is already available with some advanced systems that make CX-9 different. The SUV will keep the highlights, such as 18-inch wheels and 3-zone climate control. The i-Activsense driver-aid package is pretty sophisticated technology for the entry-level Sport trim. It will use auto headlights, control the speed and distance from other vehicles in traffic, alert drivers when leaving the lane, and help them park vehicles. Well, we know Mazda is among the leaders when it comes to safety. But, the i-Activsense is another step that will make the gap between it and the competition even larger.
The 2022 Mazda CX-9 Touring will make some of the optional accessories standard. For example, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, although experts are sure these services will be offered on the Sport trim. Connectivity and compatibility with smart devices are priorities for most carmakers. The center of the infotainment is a 9-inch touchscreen. Leather seats improve the level of comfort. Power adjustment is available for the front row.
High-End Models: Grand Touring and Signature
The Grand Touring level will make the 2022 Mazda CX-9 nearly a premium SUV. There are no too many competitors with the power moonroof and ventilated seats available under the top trim. Besides that, the Grand Touring also brings captain’s chairs in the middle row and a total seating capacity of six. Buckets are heated, as well as the steering wheel.
There is something left for the high-end Signature edition. In this package, AWD is standard and the finest leather covers the upholstery. Unique trim will make the interior more appealing. Plus, the bundle includes a premium audio system, navigation, and wireless charging.
The Carbon Package is debuting on the 2021 YM. So, the question is if the edition is a kind of a bridge between an old and new model which will make fans occupied, or it is a long-term solution. Still, Mazda didn’t go into details, unveiling only information about the paintjob and grille design. The Polymetal Grey is already familiar to Mazda 3 fans. Black details outside and red interior are expected to be available for the 2022 Mazda CX-9 Carbon Edition as well. Honeycomb grille will make the package recognizable.
2022 Mazda CX-9 Performance
A 2.5-liter turbo-four engine is capable. But, most mid-size SUVs are using a V6 unit with more power and torque. The 2022 Mazda CX-9 will get up to 250 hp with the premium fuel. The torque is at a respectable level for the small block. Still, the towing capacity will unveil that SUV needs a bit more power. Only 3,500 pounds is the rating of the CX-9. Nissan Pathfinder can do 6,000 lbs.
On the other hand, the good thing about the four-pot engine and the SkyActiv system is the fuel economy. There are no too many mid-size SUV that can top 25 mpg of combined gas mileage offered by Mazda’s vehicle. An all-wheel drive will harm the output a bit. A six-speed automatic transmission might be replaced soon. It would make the 2022 Mazda CX-9 even more efficient.
2022 Mazda CX-9 Release Date
