Fuel economy, agility, and the price are reasons why compact crossovers are the best-selling models in the US market. Downsides of these vehicles are a lack of power and sometimes cramped space inside. Still, there is enough room for five passengers and a longer trip doesn’t have to be painful.
Here, we will go through the class and the best compact crossovers for 2020. Japanese vehicles are dominating the market, but US carmakers are not too far away. There are also a few European carmakers present on the market, and the fastest-growing vehicles are coming from Korea. 2020 Toyota Rav4
Rav4 is the best-selling model in the compact crossover SUV class in 2019. The new model will get new trim levels for the base configuration and hybrid as well. For now, we have the 2020 Toyota Rav4 TRD Off-Road as the only confirmed version. Hybrid is available only with the HSE trim.
The 2020 Toyota Rav4 is getting power from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine good for 203 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is a power router. The hybrid setup uses the same drivetrain but attaches an electric motor as a help. A CVT gearbox and AWD are standard configurations. The new update could bring two-wheel drive, more trim levels, and possibly plug-in hybrid system. The base version costs just under $26,000. Fully-loaded 2020 Toyota Rav4 will reach nearly $40k. 2020 Nissan Rogue
The best-selling model from 2018 hasn’t been updated ever since. the 2020 Nissan Rogue is also unchanged, so the company can’t expect to draw new buyers. Whatsoever, the redesign is coming in 2021, so it might be clever to wait for an update.

2020 Jeep Cherokee
The base price of the 2020 Jeep Cherokee is slightly higher than for the competition. The new model is not bringing too many novelties. Still, the base versions are missing some choices to compete at the top level. A 2.4-liter engine is proven, but the 2020 Jeep Cherokee needs more options. 2020 Jeep Wrangler

Adventurers will look for various options on the new 2020 Jeep Wrangler. And the engine lineup is incredible. The PHEV version allows the vehicle to speed up to 80 mph. The electric range should be 31 miles. Unfortunately, the company didn’t say anything about the pricing of the hybrid versions. Compass High Altitude 4×4 model is the most expensive version at the moment with the $31,900 starting price.
2020 Subaru Forester
When choosing a Subaru vehicle, you are getting a unique drive experience. Unfortunately, a turbo version of the Boxer engine is not available yet. However, a flat-four unit delivers something you can’t find elsewhere. That is the main reason why we expect a lot from the 2020 Subaru Forester. Well, the new model is mostly unchanged. Minor updates are not making it more attractive than before. Optional features and options are slightly shuffled and that is all.
But, let’s get back to the Boxer engine. It is a 2.5-liter flat-four powerplant capable of producing 182 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. A turbo version could raise these numbers and other performance. The lower center of gravity provides better handling and balance. Also, the flat-four unit increases safety with its position. This is a segment where we are seeing the most changes for the 2020 Subaru Forester since the crossover is getting Rear Seat Reminder and EyeSight aid features. The new model earns five stars by NHTSA.
2020 Mazda CX-5
There is nothing new for the 2020 Mazda CX-5. This is a carry-over model. However, the crossover is one of the most exciting vehicles to own. Besides the standard engine, there are turbocharged version and diesel powertrain. A 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated version can produce 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque.
The same drivetrain uses turbochargers to boost the power to 250 hp and 310 lb-ft. As you could notice, there are no other vehicles with such high outputs. Finally, there is the freshest part of the powerplant lineup – a 2.2-liter turbodiesel unit. Available only with an AWD, it achieves 27/30 mpg.
That is not all since we can hear rumors about the 2020 Mazda CX-5 Hybrid. Well, it seems like European buyers will get this model based on a diesel drivetrain. Fans in the USA will have to wait at least until the 2021 season.
2020 VW Tiguan
There are two noteworthy changes for the 2020 VW Tiguan. The first one is a price increase of $650. The starting cost for the compact crossover is $24,850 (S trim). Well, the company added the Driver Assist suite, which costed $450 as an optional upgrade. The 4Motion AWD will cost you $1,300. There are also SE and SEL trim levels, and the late one comes with special upgrades – Premium and R-Line package. The R-Line Black edition is now also available with the SE model.
The second important change is a shorter period of warranty. The coverage lasted six years or 72,000 miles. Now, the Volkswagen cuts it to 4-year/50,000 miles. The German carmaker makes it up to new buyers with two free maintenances.
The powertrain for the 2020 VW Tiguan is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit. 180 hp and 220 lb-ft are enough for a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 lbs. The most expensive versions of the Volkswagens compact crossover will cost over $40,000.
2020 Hyundai Tucson
The leather steering wheel and four new colors are all the new 2020 Hyundai Tucson is bringing. But, the company didn’t finish the update. The engine room will soon get a revisit and the new model is about to join the lineup. The Tucson N Sport crossover is being tested in Germany and it will be able to burst over 300 hp.
The base version is mostly unchanged. There is a couple of four-pot powerplants under the bonnet. The base version is coming with a 2.0-liter unit (165 hp, 150 lb-ft), while you can pick a 2.4-liter displacement for more juice (180 hp, 175 pound-feet).
A few years ago this model stood no chance in the US market. However, reliability and the attractive price made it impress the buyers. Now, the 2020 Hyundai Tucson is on par with other vehicles in price, design quality, engine reliability, and all other segments.
2020 Kia Sportage
Kia and Hyundai are both coming from the same country. But these carmakers are not rivals. They recognized the chance to be successful if they join forces in some areas. Now, the driver-assist package includes intelligent cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure warning. Inside the cabin, you will find an eight-inch touchscreen display. The new 2020 Kia Sportage is just shy of $24,000 while the range-topping trims reach $33,500 (SX Turbo).
