Honda SUV Models for 2021: List, Prices, Types

The Japanese carmaker is a leading manufacturer in the US. Honda has three plants there and all the production comes from these factories. Actually, four, but two of them are very close in Ohio (East Liberty and Marysville Auto Plant). The other two are in Greensburg, Indiana, and Lincoln, Alabama.

The best-selling model in 2019 was CR-V compact crossover. This is the leading segment for most carmakers. Besides this one, the Honda Pilot is also positioned well. Changes for the upcoming season might make it even more popular. This model stunned the market with its styling back in 2016 when the new generation arrived.

It seems the carmaker is focusing on its premium segment. Two Acura models will go through a redesign. Also, fans expect a couple of comebacks in 2021. It is not new for Honda. They brought back Passport SUV after a long break. Now, it could be the same with Element or Crosstour.

Honda SUV Models for 2021

2021 Honda HR-V Subcompact Crossover

The 2021 Honda HR-V will be the smallest model in the lineup. The crossover is only 170 inches long. Its advantages are great agility and impressive fuel economy. The only engine in the US is a 1.8-liter unit. It produces 140 hp and 127 lb-ft of torque. The 2021HR-V returns 30 mpg combined. The downside is the interior space. However, you cannot expect too much room inside the subcompact SUV.

For the 2021 Honda HR-V, the company is preparing a big portion of changes. It is not confirmed, but the carmaker could add a hybrid configuration with more power and even better fuel economy. The redesign will make the crossover more attractive, which should draw younger buyers. The price will go up for sure. Currently, the HR-V costs just under $21,000. Touring trim is the top of the lineup model. It offers navigation, advanced safety system, leather upholstery, and LED lamps.

2021 Honda CR-V – The Most Popular Honda

Honda sold nearly 400k units of CR-V in 2019. The company sold even more compact crossovers in other countries. So, there is no surprise why they pay so much attention to this vehicle. In 2021 we can expect an update. We saw a new generation of crossover every five years. This time, Honda will give extra time to CR-V. Next year, this model will be redesigned and the sixth generation will arrive in 2023 or 2024.

The base configuration exploits a turbocharged engine. A 1.5-liter four-cylinder unit is capable to return 190 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque, with the average gas mileage at 31 mpg. With an AWD, the fuel economy drops to 29 mpg. The price of the 2021 Honda HR-V will be around $27,000 with a destination fee. The LX is the base model, and you can also upgrade the ride with EX, EX-L, or Touring packages. Hands-free tailgate, heated steering wheel, navigation, and premium audio are the most notable features you will get for $35,000.

2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid – Crossover SUV With 40 MPG

The 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid is replacing a 1.5-liter engine with a 2.0-liter unit. The Atkinson cycle motor is paired with dual-electric batteries. Total output beats turbocharged engine with 212 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque. The mileage jumps to 40 mpg in urban areas, which makes the CR-V Hybrid one of the best vehicles for city cruising. Even on highways, the crossover keeps excellent outputs, with 38 mpg achieved.

Like the standard model, the 2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid will offer you four trims, even the entry-level LX. Features are the same, the only difference is the engine configuration. The hybrid variant is coming with all-wheel drive only. That is why this model will cost around $28,000.

2021 Honda Passport – Mid-Size SUV

Passport returned pretty quietly. While the entire market expects the update of the Pilot SUV, the carmaker refreshed the lineup with a mid-size two-row vehicle. Well, the SUV is nearly the same as its sibling, with minor modifications on both fascias. Under the hood is the same 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. Slightly smaller and lighter, the 2021 Honda Passport will offer a better gas mileage.

Another difference is in the seating layout. Passport is a two-row five-seater, while the Pilot also offers the third row and room for two more persons. Surprisingly, the price of the new arrival is above the larger model. However, we believe it is just for the first edition. The 2021 Honda Passport will be cheaper than Pilot. Compared to the previously mentioned trim levels, the mid-size SUV gets the Elite version as the top of the line model.

2021 Honda Pilot – Three-Row Seven-Seater

The 2021 Honda Pilot remains the flagship SUV. The company is going to redesign its favorite vehicle. The new look is expected to stun the market like the previous update did it in 2016. However, the competition caught up with the Pilot very fast. Now, the three-row mid-size segment is one of the hottest on the market.

We expect to see the plug-in hybrid version of the 2021 Honda Pilot. Test mules are on streets and some enthusiasts expected it even this season. However, the company is not announcing anything, so the PHEV model is not official. The 2021 Pilot is going to keep a 3.5-liter V6 as the first choice. The engine comes with the same amount of power as the Passport. All-wheel drive is optional and one of the best features you can get from the SUV.

LUXURY SEGMENT

2021 Acura RDX – Small Premium Crossover

We are moving to Honda’s luxury subsidiary, Acura. Like many other carmakers, the Japanese company has its branch in this segment. Both RDX and MDX are assembled in the East Liberty plant, alongside CR-V. The 2021 Acura RDX is a compact crossover. The latest generation dates from 2018 and for the upcoming season we might see the first serious update. In short, RDX is the premium version of the Honda CR-V.

The luxury crossover is going to use a more powerful engine. A 2.0-liter mill can deliver 270 hp and 280 lb-ft thanks to the turbocharging system. One of the best upgrades for the 2021 Acura RDX will be the A-Spec package. Similar to Lexus and their F Sport models, this is mostly cosmetic modification. On the other hand, the AWD will enhance the driving impression. Walk away door lock is a very useful feature, although you can switch it off if not necessary.

2021 Acura RDX – What to Expect?

2021 Acura MDX – Mid-Size Luxury Three-Row SUV

After the facelift in 2017, we expect a larger portion of changes on the new 2021 Acura RDX. The three-row luxury SUV might enter the new generation after eight years. Various sources report that Acura and Honda are ready for this step. Well, the changes in this segment are more frequent now, and MDX will have to do something to remain competitive.

Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) is a recommended upgrade, as well as the A-Spec trim if you want to boost the ride. Furthermore, the 2021 Acura RDX will also offer improvements for the infotainment system. A hybrid system makes this SUV so special. The 2021 Acura RDX will take advantage of this configuration which creates 320 hp and 290 lb-ft. Hybrid is based on a 3.0-liter engine, while the standard setup produces 290 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque thanks to a 3.5-liter V6 powertrain.

RUMORS

2021 Honda Element – The Comeback of the Pet-Friendly Crossover

The return of the Passport sparked more rumors about further comebacks. It is quite popular nowadays, isn’t it? Ford Bronco is probably a debut of the decade. We can’t say the 2021 Honda Element is going to overshadow the legendary SUV, but it also has an army of fans waiting for its comeback. Some of them are waiting for the return for ten years. Their old ride is not disappointing them and there are a few things buyers would like to change.

One of the options is to see the 2021 Honda Element with the all-electric motor. On the other hand, its boxy look will definitely draw attention. One of the coolest accessories was a pet plank for easier access for your friends. Element even won a couple of awards for this feature. Although small, the boxy shape and interior layout provided enough space for five passengers. The comeback is still just a rumor, which is becoming louder every day.

2021 Honda Crosstour – Return After Six Years

The less likely comeback is expected by the 2021 Honda Crosstour. This vehicle was something between SUV and a wagon. Subaru Outback is still selling well with such design. However, the Crosstour never achieved enough sales and the company discontinued the nameplate after only six years. Still, the return is not likely with the company having other priorities.

One of the things that make us believe in the 2021 Honda Crosstour is its design. The coupe crossover segment is becoming more popular and the carmaker is always looking forward. However, most vehicles belong to the premium class. Not a problem – the SUV’s been called Acura Crosstour in its first two-year run, before taking Honda’s badge. Not a bad idea, but it is only some loud thinking by vehicle fans.

The New Project: 2021 Honda Electric SUV

The future of the automotive industry is in the electric engines. Honda is already catching up with a few hybrid configurations. Also, we can hear that 2021 Pilot is getting the PHEV setup. The all-electric SUV is going to follow the debut of the plug-in hybrid. So, in 2021, we could see only a concept. The company already presented six new projects based on Vision architecture.

For now, we know all the vehicles will be for the European market. Honda did the same with the CR-V Hybrid. 2021 Honda Electric SUV will be the response to the Ford E-Mach and a few other projects by different companies. The production and release date are not close yet. The SUV might be out in 2023 or 2024.
