Honda is following social media and comments of its fans. After analyzing multiple possibilities, the Japanese carmaker is close to re-launch the Element SUV. When it is going to happen, we still don’t know. Also, leaked sources are saying there are a few possibilities, but the company needs the compromise between expectations of old fans and modern requirements. The 2020 Honda Element will be an interesting experiment the automotive giant is not ready to announce yet.
The old Element was a compact crossover SUV with a distinctive boxy look. Its utility and versatility stole the hearts of its owners. Many of them are saying this is the most pet-friendly SUV they ever had. Fans don’t want a redesign or any big change in its look. Some of the things they would like to see is a new engine and the AWD. But, Honda will have to make it appealing to other groups of buyers. For that, the company needs some modern technologies and eye-catching features. Well, the 2020 Honda Element can definitely keep the boxy shape as a part of the heritage.
Pros and Cons
Honda Element was in production between 2003 and 2011. During this period, more than 320,000 units were sold. Buyers opted for this model mostly because of its dog- and bike-friendly interior layout. However, more of them looked into the new CR-V compact crossover SUV. Sales of the Element started to drop, and the company eventually discontinued the crossover. In its last two years, there was a total of 30,000 purchases. Honda sold 220,000 units of CR-V in a year when Element was discontinued.
Definitely, the quality of Honda’s engines is the main advantage. Previously, the crossover used a 2.4-liter petrol engine. The 2020 Honda Element could get the new generation of this drivetrain with improved specs, better gas mileage, and reduced emissions. Also, the space left for cargo is something we haven’t seen ever since the vehicle was discontinued. If the company creates the same layout, there are no doubt that families will be the main targets. A fuel economy is one of the rear things previous owners are complaining to. Also, the new crossover must have an AWD. The awkward interior with four seats and unique doors is a two-bladed sword. You can either love it or hate it.
2020 Honda Element Specs
A 2.4-liter engine the previous edition used during its 9-year run is still there. However, now it is improved in many ways. CR-V crossover is using it and getting 1284 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. The 2020 Honda Element should be slightly heavier than its sibling, leading to worse fuel economy. Also, the boxy look is not too aesthetic, so the levels could drop to 25-26 mpg combined. All-wheel drive is going to be optional. Standard setup includes front-wheel drive and the CVT gearbox. The towing capacity of the engine is only 1,500 pounds. However, if you need more, then you should consider the purchase of a larger model.
Another interesting theory says the new 2020 Honda Element will be a hybrid crossover. CR-V Hybrid was launched in Europe. But, the US market is yet to get such drivetrain. The company might offer the Element with a plug-in hybrid system to attract more buyers and prepare the terrain for the future. However, this is another far-fetched story which has tiny chances to become the reality.
The compact segment in the crossover SUV class is one of the most crowded. Well, these are the best-selling models of the most popular vehicles. So, it will be hard for the 2020 Honda Element to compete with likes of Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape, Toyota Rav4. But, the distinctive look and interior layout is what makes the Element different. Its specific purpose might be the key. No other crossover can match its interior storage space if the new model re-attains its old characteristics. On the other hand, Element will lack some versatility and performance.
What’s more, the boxy look brings back memories to the beginnings of the SUVs and crossovers raise. There are no too many models available nowadays with such look. One of the best-known ever, Ford Bronco, is coming back next year. With Element out as well, it could revive the interest in such types of bodies.
2020 Honda Element Comeback Chances
The interest of buyers is giving the confidence that Honda will eventually bring back the Element. They did it with Passport, although it was not as popular as the boxy crossover. Furthermore, we can consider the Passport SUV as the baby Pilot. Minor changes are making these two very similar. On the other hand, the 2020 Honda Element can offer much more. The size and performance will be the same as for the CR-V, but the look, utility, and possible hybrid engine are adding further options to buyers. If the Passport deserved to be re-launched, we are sure the Element will be here next year.
