Toyota and Mazda are expanding their partnership. The result is the first Mazda built in the US after a long time. It will be the new CX-50. But, we already wrote about it. Our concern is the 2024 Mazda CX-5, a compact crossover, the best-selling vehicle by this carmaker. Since the focus is currently on the CX-50, and a few other projects, including the pickup truck with an I6 engine, we don’t expect too many changes on the CX-5. Still, the crossover will be exciting to drive, especially if you upgrade it with one of the several optional packages.
The resale value is one of the things in common for most Mazda vehicles. The CX-5 is also very practical. The cabin offers upscale materials, pushing the crossover to the premium segment. But, there is a way to go before the 2024 Mazda CX-5 reaches the luxury class. Driving mechanics are being praised, especially if you select a turbo-four engine. The bad thing – you need premium gas for the best performance. Compared to the rest of the class, Mazda’s crossover is not as spacious as its rivals. Well, that is where the CX-9 steps in with more room and a seven-seat layout.
2024 Mazda CX-5 Specs, Hybrid, Turbo
The main powertrain for the 2024 Mazda CX-5 will be a 2.5-liter four-cylinder mill with 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. This is not a bad output for the compact crossover. However, the CX-5 receives critics for the sluggish acceleration of the entry-level model. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The company needs to upgrade the gearbox in the near future to make their crossover more appealing. Although the performances of the base model are not impressive, handling and maneuvering are making the CX-5 very popular. The gas mileage should be better than 24/30 mpg.
The 2024 Mazda CX-5 Turbo is upgrading the existing engine with turbochargers. The system boosts the outputs to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. If you use premium fuel, the performances are maximized and the engine delivers 256 hp and 320 pound-feet. This is a good upgrade, having in mind that the mileage stays at 22/28 mpg.
Finally, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 Hybrid looks like a mandatory upgrade. A few years ago, those fuel economy numbers would be just fine. But in the era of increasing prices and high pollution, a greener and more efficient choice seems to be more than reasonable. The CX-30 comes with a hybrid system, but it is not powerful enough for the larger crossover. The CX-5 will probably get a configuration centered around the existing 2.5-liter petrol unit. Engineers must aim at least 35 mpg combined to keep the vehicle competitive in its class.
Which 2024 Mazda CX-5 Trim Is the Best?
There are plenty of options available for the CX-5. The company will carry over most of them for the new 2024 YM. Of course, a few things depend on the hybrid engine and the packages it is going to use. For example, there are way more trims available for the standard 2.5 engine and the CX-5 Turbo offers only two.
The base one is the S trim. Well, the crossover is already an upscale model thanks to 17-inch wheels, LED lights, push-button-start, 10.25-inch infotainment screen, and many other standard options. The S Select upgrades the offer with charging ports at the rear seats, a power-adjustable driver’s bucket, keyless entry, and simulated leather upholstery. The S Preferred model comes with leather seats, a sunroof, and memory driver’s seat settings.
One of the favorite trims will again be the 2024 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Edition. This package takes features from the Preferred trim and adds unique styling parts that make the crossover eye-catching. Premium and Premium Plus are high-end options for the base engine.
The 2024 Mazda CX-5 Turbo uses only two trims: Base and Signature. The first one comes with a dark theme. The CX-5 Signature is the most expensive version. Buyers of this one are getting a turbocharged engine, navigation, unique wheel design, interior lighting, upscale leather seats, wood trim, and advanced safety features. Those include parking sensors, an around-view camera, and an automatic reverse braking system.
If you compare the 2024 Mazda CX-5 with other crossovers, you will see it is a bit more expensive than its rivals. But, unchanged, there is no reason for the company to increase the price. So, the CX-5 will be available for $28,000. The Turbo model starts from $38,000. If you are willing to pay so much for the crossover, they you can add $2,000 more to get the Signature edition. As said, Carbon is the most popular package. Unfortunately, it is available only with the standard drivetrain. It is a mid-range offer priced around $32,500. We expect the CX-5 hybrid to settle at the same region when it becomes available.
