General Motors is a leader in sales. The lineup is so wide and covers four companies. Nearly 3 million vehicles were sold in 2019, and more than 1/3 were crossovers. We cannot count records from 2020 and 2021, since those were crazy years because of the pandemic. Plus, the company planned a few big updates for this season, but most of them were postponed for 2022.

Of course, General Motors is going to cover all the segments of the crossover and SUV worlds. You just need to imagine a perfect model, and GM is going to deliver. There are vehicles you can buy under $20,000, while the high-end packages built SUVs with six-digit prices. From five to nine is a seating capacity. Three-, four-, six-, eight-cylinder engines are available. One of the downsides is a lack of hybrid motors. But, it is about to be changed.

Here is the list of top 10 SUVs and crossovers for the next season.

  1. 2022 Buick Encore GX

The 2022 Buick Encore GX is a new vehicle. General Motors will build it in South Korea, but the crossover is going to be available in the US. The company launched the Encore GX before the pandemic took a swing and it is still a new model. Buyers of the first units are happy with the performance and the price, while there is room for improvements under the hood. A pair of turbocharged three-cylinder plants are not delivering enough power. On the other hand, the 2022 Encore GX is going to make it up a bit with excellent gas mileage.

Preferred, Select, and Essence are the trim levels available for this crossover. A 1.2-liter engine creates 137 horsepower, while a 1.3-liter mill improves outputs to 155 hp and 175 lb-ft. The base price starts from $24,200. Essence trim combined with all-wheel drive will make the MSRP jump over $31,000.

EXPECTATIONS BY GM AUTHORITY

  1. 2022 GMC Terrain

We are staying in the compact crossover world. This time, the refresh was a bit late and the all-new Terrain was postponed for the next season. It will be worth of waiting since it brings a new look, packages, and options. The highlight of the lineup is an off-road AT4 edition with special suspension and parts that will bring more fun to your adventures.

The 2022 GMC Terrain is still not out, and we can already find a couple of downsides. For example, the company carried over a 1.5-liter engine. It won’t stun you with the performance or gas mileage. On the other hand, General Motors makes it better with AT4 and Denali packages. Buyers can pick between enhanced off-road performance and a premium look. Still, the price is above the competition, but still under the luxury segment.

  1. 2022 Chevy Traverse

It is already one of the best mid-size three-row SUVs in the market. Like many other vehicles, the 2022 Chevy Traverse will be all-new, after the company made a break in 2021 with changes. The front and rear fascias are new, LED lamps became standard, and the start/stop system can be switched off now. A V6 is a standard engine. There is a room for seven or eight passengers, depending on the layout. Compared to other models in the same segment, the 2022 Traverse is going to be slightly bigger.

We expected a hybrid upgrade after the update, but GM decided not to install it. What’s more, a V6 is the only drivetrain, while some rivals are also using V8 engines. The powerplant is mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. Front-wheel drive is still standard, and AWD optional. Plenty of options are available through trim levels, and one of the best upgrades is the Redline Edition, eligible for certain packages.

  1. 2022 Cadillac Lyriq

The 2022 Cadillac Lyriq might be one of the reasons why Traverse is not getting a hybrid engine. The concept vehicle presented an electric architecture and the prototype is expected already next year. The 2022 Cadillac Lyriq is going to be one of many EVs by General Motors. Another possible model is Hummer electric SUV, but it won’t be available until 2023.

The new Lyriq is going to cost at least $60,000. Power outputs are expected to be around 220 horsepower, while torque could go up to 330 lb-ft. This is a single-battery layout that will be able to cover the range of 300 miles. High-end options are also possible. A Dual-motor system should put out more power and increase the range. Of course, the price will go up as well.

  1. 2022 Chevy Tahoe

Tahoe and Suburban full-size SUVs are one of the best-known models by the US carmaker. Those would be ranked higher, but the company launched the new generation in 2020. With a lot of changes, the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe is going to be competitive against Ford Expedition and Toyota Sequoia. Now, the full-size SUV are using independent rear suspension. The price starts above $50,000 and the package includes a V8 engine, or a diesel, and up to 123 cubic feet of cargo space.

A 5.3-liter unit is the base one and it creates 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. A 6.2-liter V8 is good for 420 hp and 460 pound-feet, while a 3.0-liter turbodiesel is there for 277 ponies and 460 lb-ft of twist. A ten-speed automatic transmission is now standard all across the lineup. Rear axle gets the power and 4WD is optional. High Country is the best package for the 2022 Chevy Tahoe.

  1. 2022 Buick Envision

The 2022 Buick Envision is a vehicle somewhere between the standard and luxury class. Advanced options are available at a reasonable price. However, the top accessories are coming with the Avenir edition. For the upcoming season, we won’t see any serious upgrade. The base offer starts with the Preferred package and $32,000.

A 2.0-liter turbo-four engine is the only choice and creates 230 hp and 258 lb-ft. A nine-speed gearbox is a power router. Essence is a mid-range offer, while the top of the class version is the 2022 Buick Envision Avenir. This is the best-selling model in this list. Well, the 2022 Chevy Equinox is going to belong to the most popular class. GM tries to make it up to fans by adding the RS model.

A 1.5-liter turbocharged engine is creating 170 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque. The gas mileage is above 30 mpg, which is competitive at this segment. Surprisingly, a six-speed gearbox is still there, while most experts believed to see a nine-pace transmission. The start/stop system is going to save some fuel, but if it becomes annoying, drivers can switch it off. Pricing starts from $27,000. LS, LT, RS, and Premier are trim levels for the 2022 Chevy Equinox.

  1. 2022 GMC Yukon

The 2022 GMC Yukon is a mechanical sibling to Chevy Tahoe. However, we rank this model at number 2 of our list because of the options it offers. All the GMC vehicles seem a bit upscaled compared to Chevrolet’s models. Plus, the new Yukon comes with additional options, such as an off-road AT4 package, premium Denali, or long-wheelbase Yukon XL. The last one is a class leader in cargo space with 145 cubic feet.

Under the hood of the 2022 GMC Yukon is a 5.3-liter engine. A 6.2-liter is optional, as well as a 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel. 1. 2022 Cadillac Escalade

The best SUV by GM is the 2022 Cadillac Escalade. It is an easy pick. One of the synonyms of luxury is out there since 1998. For the upcoming season, the Escalade is going to be an all-new model. It already sets up standards in the premium class. Its archrival is Lincoln Navigator. A 6.2-liter V8 lays under the hood. Fans are mentioning more frequently the Escalade-V performance model. We won’t write it off, although rumors have no official foundation.

The MSRP for the 2022 Cadillac Escalade is going to start under $80,000. If you are a fan of oil burners, the Duramax unit costs the same as a large V8 petrol mill. Super Cruise is a part of the special equipment the Escalade is going to offer. ESV is an extended version. The EXT truck is not coming back. Platinum Sport brings a 36-speaker AKG sound system. The price can break a $100,000 mark with high-end options.
