More and more details are being unveiled about the all-new 2024 Honda CR-V. The next-gen crossover will be ready to take on the leaders in this segment. With a pair of hydrogen units, its PHEV seems to be very promising. Honda is going to take the battle with Toyota Rav4 and Ford Escape to another level. With the CR-V, those are only 3 compact crossovers with hybrid units that can do 40+ mpg. The PHEV model adds another dimension to the offer.
Those are the latest updates about the 2024 Honda CR-V. Before that, we learned the vehicle is entering the new generation. That means big changes, including this one in the powertrain room. Fans could see test mules under heavy camo a few months ago, and it was obvious that the new edition is coming out soon. The manufacturer stripped the camo from the CR-V and now we can discuss the fresh look.
Of course, the company left something for the premiere, when fans will hear everything about the new crossover, including pricing and packages it is going to offer.
2024 Honda CR-V Plug-In Hybrid System
Since the 2023 YM is all-new, the next edition is not going to change anything on the body. Well, the 2024 Honda CR-V PHEV is another fresh addition, but the system comes with hydrogen fuel cells. We thought it is still too advanced technology. Toyota, Ford and other carmakers have some concepts, but none of them entered production. Honda worked with General Motors on this project which will place the system with petrol engines and hydrogen motors in the CR-V.
The Japanese carmaker already had a run in the fuel cell world with the Clarity sedan. The stint was not too successful, ending with the discontinuation of the car in 2021. But, not too long time after that, Honda announced new projects. And here we are – the CR-V fuel cell crossover is coming out in 2024. For now, specs details are not unveiled. The company shared information about the production, though. The first wave should bring around 50,000 units.
Specs and Hybrid MPG
Under the hood of the 2024 Honda CR-V will be a 1.5-liter turbo-four engine. The system is revisited for the new generation and now the unit generates 190 hp and 179 lb-ft of torque. The gas mileage is 29/35 mpg if you select the front-wheel drive, or 28/33 with all-wheel drive. Automatic transmission is the only option for the US market. The towing capacity is not impressive – 1,500 pounds.
A hybrid setup is one of the best in the game. Properly equipped, you can get 43 mpg in the city. A 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle motor is under the bonnet and it gets help from an electric motor. The 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid produces 204 horsepower and sprints 0-60 mph in 9 seconds. This configuration is there to save fuel, not to race. Combined mileage is 39 mpg, or 37 mpg if you want an all-wheel drive. Snow driving mode comes with it, and it is very helpful on slippery terrains. Two trim levels are available for the hybrid model – Sport and Sport Touring.
Grades and Equipment
The first edition of the new generation is not going too wide with options. There are only four packages ready for the 2024 Honda CR-V, including those with hybrid engines. Fans are confident that more trim levels are coming since the base EX starts from $33,000. That is too much for a compact crossover. Highlights of the package are 18-inch wheels, a push-button start, and a 7-inch touchscreen. So, nothing impressive as the price might indicate.
The 2024 Honda CR-V EX-L adds parking sensors, a power liftgate, wireless smartphone connectivity, memory seat settings, larger touchscreen and more speakers. So, it seems like a reasonable upgrade for $5,000, but the final price is nearly $38,000. That is nearly a cost of a luxury compact crossover, such as the Lexus NX, or Cadillac XT4.
If you opt for a hybrid version, the Sport model comes with a special appearance package. Many body parts are blacked out for a sportier impression. Leather wraps the steering wheel and a shift knob. Extra USB ports are added to the rear row. The Sport Touring grade is also exclusive for a hybrid engine. Lager 19-inch black wheels, a hands-free liftgate, rain-sensitive wipers, and Bose sound system are the highlights of this package.
Rumors: 2024 Honda CR-V Type R
Speaking of new trim levels – the 2024 Honda CR-V Type R might become the new top-of-the-class version. Well, the Japanese company is not expanding the lineup with this badge, although fans of many cars, SUVs and trucks would like to see the Type R on Ridgeline, Pilot, and other vehicles. One thing that makes us optimistic is the arrival of more Type S models in the premium Acura lineup. But, the MDX had a hybrid engine while everyone expected Honda to carry it over to the Pilot. Anyway, that didn’t happen, so we can’t be sure about the Type R just because Acura has Type S models.
