As the next-gen model, the 2024 Chevy Trax brings plenty of novelties and upgrades compared to its predecessor. We want to underline enhanced safety and extra room inside the cabin. Of course, a complete redesign will make the Trax fresh. The first impression is that the company made the crossover more aggressive. An inline-three engine replaces a four-pot unit. Surprisingly, GM kept a six-speed automatic transmission. Trax was one of the rare subcompact crossovers with an all-wheel drive. An FWD is the standard setup on the new one, while everyone expects the comeback of the AWD.
The release date of the 2024 Chevy Trax is not announced yet. We knew the second generation is on the way, and enthusiasts expected it already in production. But, everything is slower these days, especially when the vehicle is not an electric model. Anyway, production starts soon and experts predict the price of $21,500 for the entry-level version. More grades will be available. Well, it was not hard to guess, with the outgoing Trax offering only two trims.
2024 Chevy Trax New Engines
The new 1.2-liter mill is powering the second-gen crossover. Surprise surprise – engineers downpowered the setup compared to the previous edition. A turbocharged 3-cylinder unit is producing 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. The old Trax could do 155 hp and 177 lb-ft with a four-pot mill. Anyway, 137 ponies is more than enough for the subcompact crossover, and the Chevrolet Trailblazer is already using it. In a matter of fact, the 2024 Chevrolet Trax borrows the system from its smaller sibling.
For now, this seems to be the only option. Engineers managed to improve the gas mileage from 24/32 mpg, to reportedly 29/33/31 mpg. For now, General Motors didn’t announce that the new 2024 Chevy Trax is using an all-wheel drive. Again, not a big downside for the subcompact crossover class. However, an extra option is always welcome. We’ll see if the new turbocharged I3 engine can make the Trax faster. The previous record for a 0-60 mph sprint was 9.7 seconds. A smaller Trailblazer with a 1.2-l engine could do it in 9.5 sec. Trax will be slightly larger.
No Hybrid Option
Only one engine for the subcompact crossover can go without problems in this segment. But, having in mind that the closest cousin, Trailblazer, also offers a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine, we are somehow disappointed. Plus, outputs of this unit are very similar to the outgoing model, which is another reason why fans are quite unhappy with downpowering the Trax. It still can get a larger I3 unit with 154 hp and 174 lb-ft. Just one of the advantages is a crispier acceleration, which will take 0.5 sec less for the 0-60 mph run. The fuel economy is at the similar level to the 1.2-liter plant.
One thing is sure – the 2024 Chevrolet Trax is not getting a hybrid unit. Such systems are not so common in the subcompact realm. You won’t find too many companies using it. Plus, General Motors totally skipped this step and went straight to the EV world. So, we have the Bolt EUV as the mini SUV with a pure electric powertrain. 2024 Chevy Trax Grades and Accessories
LS remains the base version for the 2024 Chevy Trax. But, that is not the same package we had, that is for sure. Highlights are an 8-inch display for the upgraded infotainment system. The Chevy Safety Assist features lane keep assist, automatic high beams, and forward collision warning with pedestrian detection. Steel wheels are standard and the 1RS will use larger alloy rims. It also comes with RS exterior and interior accents. A black grille and black emblems will make it easy to recognize. Active noise cancellation will make a ride smoother.
Another familiar trim level is the Trax LT. We believe this is going to be a favorite option, thanks to an 11-inch infotainment display, extra speakers and special silver details on the front and rear fascia. The 2RS upgrades the previous RS version with a heated front row, Evotex seat trim, and heated steering wheel. 19-inch wheels look mean on the small SUV. Trax Activ is another new grade. Highlights of this one are a power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, heated mirrors, IntelliBeam headlights, and tinted windows.
Pricing
The base cost of the new Trax will be $21,495. However, you need to add destination fee. The MSRP of 1RS is $23,195, very close to LT ($23,395). The 2RS and Activ are just under $25,000. Sunroof costs $900, the Convenience package is a $600-$900 upgrade, and extra driver-aid features bundle is $650. Seven colors are available for the entry-level version: Summit White, and six metallic paintjobs Crimson, Blue Glow, Mosaic Black, Sterling Gray, Harvest Bronze and one premium shade – Cayenne Orange ($400). Cacti Green will be added later, and other versions also offer Fountain Blue and Nitro Yellow.
