We thought Volvo is taking a break, but the Swedish company is continuing to stun the public. Fans were keen on hearing news about new models, such as XC100. But, the carmaker was working on other things. The 2023 Volvo XC40 facelift brings a fresh look to the smallest crossover in the lineup. The manufacturer made an official statement, saying both classic and Recharge versions will feature a fresh look. Well, fans have nothing against it.

One of the main changes is a complete hybridization of the engine lineup. Of course, the 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge remains an EV. Ever since its introduction in 2017, this small crossover is moving bonds. Not only drivetrains are important, but also bold styling. For the 2023 season, designers revisited the front fascia. Official photos are showing similarities to the C40 model. The new headlights are definitely an eye-catching detail on the XC40.

Google is making a new infotainment system. We’ll see how it is going to work with the 2023 XC40 and probably all other Volvo vehicles in the foreseeable future. It is already available for the Recharge model. The EV version is leading the way with the best option in the lineup, and the entire subcompact crossover market in some segments.

2023 Volvo XC40: What’s New?

So, Volvo already announced the arrival of the new vehicle, although fans were seeking something else. Well, this can give us a preview of what to expect from future models. It is hard to compare the 2023 Volvo XC40 with the potential XC100, which should be an SUV bigger than the XC90. On the other hand, we can also hear rumors about the XC20. One thing is sure – the company is proceeding with the plan of complete electrification. It will take some time. The initial plan was to do it by 2025. The smallest crossover in the lineup is on the good way to complete the mission.

So, the upcoming subcompact SUV is introducing a few changes to its body. The company is showing us pictures of the Recharge version with a well-known Thor’s Hammer lights design, which, by the way, are coming in updated shape. Pixelized LED lamps are impressive and draw a lot of attention. The size of the subcompact vehicle is the same. It makes the XC40 a perfect choice for city cruising and parking in urban areas. The downside of its compact size is a lack of space for passengers. Volvo manages to make up with premium features and upper-level comfort. Plenty of customization options are available. For the exterior, colors and wheels are ready to make the personalization of the 2023 Volvo XC40 more interesting.

Under The Hood and Seats

The XC40 Recharge started a new page in the evolution of Volvo vehicles. Nevertheless, this Recharge is the only EV in the family. You will find the nameplate in the XC60 and XC90 lineup, but those are only PHEV systems. Besides an all-electric drivetrain, the 2023 Volvo XC40 will also offer hybrid systems. The company dropped conventional units, making another step towards the complete electrification of the lineup.

So, the Recharge model is combining a couple of batteries to create 201 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. For the new season, there are no changes on this electric crossover, meaning the motors can make the 2023 Volvo XC40 run 225 miles on a single charge. This is not bad, but to stay competitive, the company has to make improvements. Audi Q6 is coming with some serious equipment and range. Meanwhile, Volvo will work on the recharging systems, which should speed up the time waiting for batteries to be restored.

The T4 and T5 configurations are still there. But, this time, with the mild-hybrid systems. Those are not going to take the performance to another level. However, a small improvement in the mileage is always welcome. A 2.0-liter turbo-four engine is under the hood of those setups. The T4 is tuned to 187 hp and 220 lb-ft. The MHEV should help it achieve better mileage in the city. The current fuel economy is not reflecting the XC40 is a small SUV. The T5 adds more muscles. An upgraded version of the engine setup can make 250 hp.

2023 Volvo XC40 Prices

The first report is not mentioning the price modifications for the 2023 Volvo XC40. But, do not expect any discount. Everything is getting more expensive. Plus, the XC40 is adding more features and options. What’s more, the current subcompact crossover is one of the most expensive in the market. So, Volvo won’t have too much room for the price bump, but it is happening, like it or not. The 2023 YM will start above $35,000 for the T4 Momentum. Inscription package and the T5 drivetrain will make it go over $42,000. The cost of the Recharge version is $55,000.
