After seven years, Volvo’s flagship model is heading to the new generation. And it will be fun with the all-electric model, which might obtain the T9 badge. The 2022 Volvo XC90 is also boosting the off-road skills. Fans were hoping the new SUV might arrive next year, but the COVID-19 outburst definitely prolonged the debut for 2022. Meanwhile, we will try to obtain more details, since the carmaker already started the development.
There are a few official details about the midsize SUV. For example, the electric motor is certain. Volvo will first launch the XC40 EV. When the situation calms down, the 2022 Volvo XC90 will get the same upgrade, which is the final step in electrification. We are not surprised by this move, since the Swedish company already delivered the PHEV version, one of the most advanced systems on the market.
Let’s see what we know so far about the upcoming SUV.
Redesign, New Look, Similar Size
The new generation will definitely change the look of the 2022 Volvo XC90. The SUV is 5 years old and the carmaker opted for the complete overhaul instead of a minor facelift. The midsize class is currently one of the most popular in the market and Volvo wants to use the momentum. Family cars, not as large as full-size vehicles, and cheaper, are offering three rows of seats. Still, their exterior must be eye-catching to lure more buyers. The competition will be tough, with Lincoln Aviator, Lexus RX, and German big-three: BMW X5, Mercedes GLE, and Audi Q7 monitoring the situation.
The all-electric model will be underpinned by the new architecture. Still, the standard model will come with the same size as before. If you think the XC90 is not gaining extra space inside, let’s wait for its arrival and interior layout to see if designers can save some room in the cabin.
Interior, Cargo Space, Seating Capacity
By default, the 2022 Volvo XC90 will be a seven-seater. You will be able to remove the rear row or to pick the captain’s chairs in the middle. That will drop the seating capacity to six. The premium carmaker is always packing its vehicles with the latest technology. So, it is not fair to talk about it two years before the arrival of the midsize SUV.
Currently, you can store up to 86 cubic feet. Behind the last row, there is 16 cu.ft. the electric version could harm the room, because of the battery placed under seats. Like many Volvo vehicles, the SUV comes in three different trim levels. These are Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription. Even the EV will use them. However, the new, more capable off-road version is about to debut. Details about this model are still unavailable, but it seems like Volvo is ready to take on the Toyota 4Runner and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and upgrade the offer with premium features.
Autonomous Drive Reaches Level 4
One of the things that make XC90 so special is the Pilot Assist. As a part of the package, you will find adaptive cruise control. With it, the SUV keeps the lane, but the autonomous drive of the Tesla vehicles offer a lot more. Volvo will have to do something about it and the company is ready to make a move. The Swedish carmaker said the Level 4 is a plan, but they didn’t release the schedule. The 2022 Volvo XC90 is the perfect occasion for advanced technology.
The new level of autonomous drive will be able to take you to the destination with the minimum driver’s interference. The carmaker skips all the previous steps and tries to introduce itself with Level 4.
All-Electric T9 Model
The all-new 2022 Volvo XC90 is getting an electric engine. It is the best combination with the autonomous drive. Still, we don’t have too many details, but more than 200 miles will be the range of the pure electric drive. Some sources reported the new version is going to be called T9. That is the upgrade compared to the T8 PHEV model. This one can cover some range with its electric battery, but not as much as EV.
The carmaker will also keep the petrol units. All these models are based on a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine. T5 and T6 are available configurations for the midsize SUV. Also, the company offers diesel units in Europe, but these powerplants won’t be available in the future when the electric model appears.
When Will 2022 Volvo XC90 Be Available?
The new generation of the SUV was supposed to debut next season. However, the 2022 Volvo XC90 will not be out until the last months of 2021 or early in 2022. The price will get a modifications, especially with the all-electric system on the way and autonomous drive. The base model with petrol configuration will be around $50,000. Heavily-loaded EV will go against Tesla Model X in every possible way, including the price.
