The development of the new 2022 Range Rover Sport speeds up and the new prototypes were spotted on the streets recently. We thought the pandemic is not going to affect the release date of the new SUV, but the mid-size three-row model is postponed for 2022. Well, designers and engineers will have extra time to make everything perfect.

Well, the luxury model is quite old. The current generation debuted in 2013 and the last serious update happened in 2017. In the market where there is plenty of other mid-size premium SUVs, more frequent changes are required. Still, the Range Rover Sport maintained its popularity and stayed interesting thanks to advanced features inside the cabin and a lot of choices for the engine room. Plenty of options will remain the strong side, while the stumbling block for most fans is the high price.

Versions

Let’s check out which models are likely to stay a part of the lineup in 2022. The entry-level model is using a turbocharged I6 engine with 355 horsepower, which makes the 2022 Range Rover Sport a good match to German luxury SUVs. All the packages for the SUV come with their own drivetrains and the base version will definitely keep an I6 as the main choice. The same unit raises the power outputs to 400 hp when you pick the P400 model. There are two packages with a diesel configuration as well, SE and HSE. Still, this one could be dropped for 2022, since the JLR is trying to make its lineup greener.

The P400e package is combining HSE features and the plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Based on this one, the carmaker could develop an all-electric powertrain in the foreseeable future. We can hear rumors, but nothing is official yet. On the other hand, the JLR is already in the market with the Jaguar I-Pace EV, and the E-Pace is about to join the lineup pretty soon. A couple of performance versions are well-known to all the fans of such vehicles. The Autobiography edition and the SVR are definitely staying at the top of the class, being big rivals to BMW X5M and Mercedes GLE AMG.

Specs

The base drivetrain for the 2022 Range Rover Sport is a 3.0-liter inline-six. It replaced an old supercharged V6 last year and the first impressions are quite positive. We expect more fans to get used to this powerplant in 2021 and 2022. An inline-six is available in two configurations. The standard output is 355 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque, while the P400 model is going to enhance the energy to 395 ponies and 406 pound-feet of twist. The I6 gets help from batteries, but only through a mild-hybrid setup.

If you are looking for an SUV with true electric power, then the PHEV is the choice. Nevertheless, this system is based on a 2.0-liter petrol engine and gets an extra boost from a 105 kW battery. Total output is 398 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque, and the SUV returns 19 mpg combined. A part of the lineup is also a turbodiesel V6 engine. With 255 hp and 445lb-ft, it is one of the best haulers in the lineup, helping Range Rover Sport reaching 7,700 pounds.

2022 Range Rover Sport Autobiography and SVR

When it comes to performance, the choice in the market is narrowed to a few models. And the JLR is offering a couple of options for the mid-size Range Rover Sport. A 5.0-liter supercharged V8 is the powerplant of the Autobiography edition, which will provide 520 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque. This SUV will need only 4.8 seconds to hit the 60 mph mark. That is not all, since the time can drop to 4.2 seconds if the SVR package is added. This one boosts the outputs to 575 horsepower and 515 pound-feet. We can expect a further enhancement since the new BMW X5 can do 600 hp or even 615 with the Competition package.

2022 Range Rover Sport Prices

The biggest downside of any 2022 Range Rover Sport model will be its cost. The MSRP now starts at $70,000. You can save $20,000 by choosing the Lexus RX or Lincoln Aviator. Still, the JLR adds special materials, advanced features, smart infotainment, and powerful engines to make its models much better. The P400 will add $15,000 above the starting price, and a turbodiesel unit will cost $80,000. The plug-in hybrid is at the same level as the P400. Surprisingly, the base V8 setup is not too expensive and we can see it under $90k in 2022. On the other hand, the 2022 Range Rover Sport SVR enters the six-digit price realm. There, we also find its biggest rivals, the abovementioned models of German carmakers.  Compared to the Mercedes AMG GLE 63 and BMW X5M, the SVR seems to be a more affordable offer with a price tag of $120,000.
