Is Nissan Going to Bring Back 2022 Xterra?

1318 0

The 2022 Nissan Xterra is one of the dream cars for fans seeing it out a few years ago. Well, the question is where to position the SUV in the crowded lineup? The Xterra might deploy the body-on-frame architecture and become an off-road specialist, like Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, or Toyota 4Runner. Plus, Nissan has one of the best 4×4 packages in the market, the Pro-4X, which can enhance the off-road ride impression. All in all, there is room for the new model, but it is up to Nissan’s chiefs if they see the comeback expendable.

Currently, the company is refreshing the entire lineup. Still, we see redesigns and new generations, while there is definitely a lack of all-new models. Nissan 400Z sports car is not official yet, but it is a successor or practically the next-gen of the 370Z. Nissan Ariya is a hot subject, but the electric crossover is not going to debut or underpin some of the existing vehicles in 2022.

Another question is if the market is ready for the 2022 Nissan Xterra. Well, we are not yet out of pandemic, which slowed down sales. But, the industry is recovering. The Japanese company has big appetites and ambitions, and it is reflected by the latest updates on existing vehicles. Nissan is always keen to bring more projects and explore new segments. The Xterra is not a total road to the unknown, since fans are familiar with the nameplate and what it represents.

Off-Road Ready

One thing is sure – the 2022 Nissan Xterra will be the 4×4 specialist. Nissan needs such an SUV since Pathfinder and Murano are not going to be competitive in this segment. Jeep Wrangler and Toyota 4Runner are the best-sellers, while the comeback of the Ford Bronco is going to put a lot of pressure on these vehicles. Nissan, with high ambitions, wants to compete in the off-road SUV class. Well, first of all, the Xterra would need a body-on-frame architecture. It is a way better choice for off-road adventures. The ladder frame is making vehicles safer and more durable. Plus, the ride can be configured for tougher terrains.

Nissan will definitely add the Pro-4X as the optional package. This upgrade will bring a special off-road suspension setup with class-leading shocks and springs. Underbody protection includes skid plates. Also, all-terrain tires and exhaust systems enhance both performance and the look. All in all, the new 2022 Xterra must combine styling and performance in order to succeed. Furthermore, price and durability are going to determine the future of the vehicle.

2022 Nissan Xterra Warrior

We almost forgot about the concept that stunned the off-road world a few years ago. The Warrior concept was presented on the Titan XD truck. Still, the idea has never been turned into a production vehicle. So, it is clear that Nissan had no intention of bringing it to the market. But, with rumors reviving the Xterra SUV, some fans are already asking about further 4×4 upgrades, besides Pro-4X. The Warrior might be the right choice that will put the 2022 Nissan Xterra next to 4Runner TRD Pro, Wrangler Rubicon, and eventually Bronco Raptor if this model shows up any time soon.

2022 Nissan Xterra Specs, Potential Engines

The most recent update under the hood we saw brought a new powerplant to the Frontier truck. Since the 2022 Nissan Xterra is a truck-based SUV, fans can expect to see the same 3.8-liter V6 with 310 hp and 280 lb-ft, which should be enough for off-road duties. You might remember a similar configuration from the past, but this six-cylinder unit is naturally aspirated, without turbo- and superchargers engineers previously deployer on the 350Z sports car. The first impressions are very positive and the V6 seems to be the perfect option for the Xterra SUV. A nine-speed auto gearbox is there to transfer power. The truck is using front-wheel drive, but the company is considering shifting the power to rear wheels. Of course, for the best off-road impression, you will definitely need the 4×4.

Verdicts

The idea of the 2022 Nissan Xterra comeback is thrilling. But, the current situation in the market is not promising. Even if there were some indications about the return, the process is probably put on hold. Nissan needs to examine the market and interest before they invest a significant amount of money. This is not an ordinary comeback, since the Xterra was out for a few years. The new Nissan Terra from the Chinese market might serve as the base, but a lot of upgrades are required to meet demands from US customers. Larger engines, tougher look, advanced technology, and a few more things seem to be like a big project. Nissan will focus on the updates of existing vehicles. The new Rogue and Frontier are already out, as well as the premium Infiniti QX60. Next season should also bring updates on the Ariya concept, Infiniti QX80 Monograph, and mid-size Pathfinder.

  1. I’m very interested in the Xterra for the American market. I would be very interested in the Pro 4Xmodel. I have purchased 12 Nissan cars and past models of the off road version of the 1989 pathfinder mountainer which was my first Nissan. We would be looking to purchase in 2023. Please keep me informed on the progress of the new Xterra Pro 4X
