All-New 2022 Mazda CX-50 Introduces Inline-6 Engine

The 2022 Mazda CX-50 is going to be a new compact crossover, a replacement for the CX-5. The vehicle is ready for the next generation, and the Japanese carmaker is not refreshing only the styling, but also the badge. Plus, we expect to see a kind of hybrid/electric drivetrain.

Mazda filed for the registration of the new nameplate. It didn’t take too long to experts to start making connections between the 2022 Mazda CX-50 and CX-5. The smaller CX-3 and CX-30 served as the pattern. Still, if the previous experience can show us the way of development, it doesn’t mean the carmaker will do everything the same this time.

All in all, the 2022 Mazda CX-50 is planned for the production later this year.  The SkyActiv engine lineup will bring a few improvements. Of course, there is a fresh styling for the crossover’s redesign. All in all, experts are recommending waiting for the new model, rather than rushing and buying the 2021 YM.

2022 Mazda CX-50 Redesign

The new generation is always exciting to see. Numerous changes are what make fans happy. Especially when we speak of the Japanese carmaker. The company is well-known for its styling and aggressive appearance. Unfortunately, we don’t know too much beyond the renaming. Definitely, designers will have a lot of work to make the 2022 Mazda CX-50 ready for the debut. Expectations are already high and the premiere is not going to be spoiled with the COVID-19 pandemic.

What to expect from the CX-50? First of all, it will keep the position in the compact crossover world. We doubt the CX-5 stays put, and the new model taking another slot, between compact and some other segment. But, it is possible as well. We’ve also heard that Mazda might test the coupe crossover market. Nevertheless, all those are rumors. The only certain thing is that the CX-50 is coming and it is going to be related to the CX-5, in one way or another.

SkyActiv Engines and Inline-Six Debut

Something more than a rumor are stories about the inline-six engine and a new platform. That, in the combination with the redesign, is enough to start the new generation of the crossover and even rename it. The architecture of the all-new 2022 Mazda CX-50 is going to be more flexible, allowing hybrid and all-electric upgrades, while the rear-wheel drive steps on the market. Well, most of the stories we can find about the RWD are related to an all-new inline-six engine. Mazda is not dropping a reliable SkyActiv four-cylinder powerplants for sure, so the I-6 is definitely the optional engine.

A six-cylinder engine will bring back rotary system. Mazda was well-known for this technology, but recently, these fell out from the pecking order. Still, the development is considered as the top secret and there is no surprise why there is a lack of details. We know that Mazda broke the partnership with Ford after 30 years. The Japanese carmaker joined forces with another Far East manufacturer – Isuzu.

Standard Drivetrains

A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is still going to produce the power for the 2022 Mazda CX-50. We assume the new model is carrying over the powerplants from the CX-5. In its base form, the engine is good for 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet. That is expected output from a four-banger. The gas mileage is also good, returning 28 mpg combined and 31 on the highway. All-wheel drive will increase the consumption though.

Boosted with turbochargers, the same engine enhances outputs to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft. Nevertheless, a premium fuel is required. Standard gas will drop numbers to 227 hp and 310 pound-feet. This configuration is coming with the all-wheel drive, which will return 22/27 mpg. It is time to see a six-speed automatic off. The replacement is going to bring a smoother ride and a better gas mileage.

The company dropped a turbodiesel unit. SkyActiv technology is known for its environmental-friendly nature, even when oil-burner is the source of power. Still, Mazda is making space for the inline-six engine, and even a kind of hybrid powertrain. In the compact crossover segment, the leading vehicles can return more than 40 mpg. However, Toyota Rav4, Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape are all doing that with hybrid units.

When Will 2022 Mazda CX-50 Be Available?

The release date for the 2022 Mazda CX-50 is not set yet. The carmaker is still waiting for the green light by the USPTO – United States Patent and Trademark Office. Still, we see no problems here and it is just a matter of time when will the CX-50 become a part of the lineup. Meanwhile, engineers and designers are working hard to create the perfect combination that will be suitable for the new projects, such as inline-six engine, new transmission, and electric drivetrain.
