Teaser images were enough for experts to start investigating. Once again, they shown that persistence pays off. The first indications were correct and now the 2022 Infiniti QX55 is officially here. Well, the company is testing it and some details are already shared with fans. The first images are bringing back memories. Infiniti’s legendary FX model was launched in 2003 and some of its design cues are noticeable on the new coupe crossover. Nevertheless, the QX55 won’t have too much in common with the old platform. Instead, it shares the architecture with the compact QX50. We expected that.

Besides the more aggressive styling, the 2022 Infiniti QX55 will share pretty much everything with the conventional sibling. But, it can show us a preview of mid-cycle updates which are on the way for the QX50. The styling is still fresh since the latest version of crossover debuted in 2019. But, in this segment, the speed of evolution and changes is very fast. So, Infiniti will have to keep up with the competition.

Where Does the 2022 Infiniti QX55 Fit?

The 2022 Infiniti QX55 is starting a new era in the evolution of the Japanese carmaker. The crossover is taking a more attractive coupe design and finds room between QX50 and QX60 models. It is a unique vehicle in the lineup for now. Nevertheless, there is a lot of competition in this market. BMW started the chapter with the X6, a coupe SUV based on the X5. Soon, other companies recognized the value of the market. Of course, BMW’s archrival Mercedes was the first one to respond, and now we have GLC Coupe, in standard and AMG variants. Porsche decided to go with the larger Cayenne. Meanwhile, BMW extended the offer to X4 and X2. Another Japanese carmaker is producing a coupe crossover, but not the premium model. Toyota is out with C-HR. Audi is also arriving, but with the all-electric Q4 E-Tron.

Under the Hood

The luxury crossover will need more power than non-premium vehicles. on the other hand, we already know that the 2022 Infiniti QX55 is sharing the drivetrain with the QX50. Nevertheless, do not take this for granted. The small SUV might also get a hybrid version, a similar one the Nissan Rogue is using. But, let’s start with facts.

The main source of power for the QX55 coupe crossover is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pot unit. It will be paired with a CVT gearbox that sends power to all wheels. It seems like the 2WD is not an option. With 268 horsepower, this engine is more than competitive. As the matter of fact, it creates more energy than its German rivals. On the other hand, we don’t think Infiniti is going to chase Mercedes AMG and BMW M models. A sloped roof could improve aerodynamics, improving the overall fuel economy. The first real-world mpg ratings will be available in mid-2021.

2022 Infiniti QX55 Hybrid

Nowadays, hybrid configurations are there to boost both power and gas mileage. In the future, everything will lean toward full electrification. Nissan, the owner of the Infiniti brand, produces the best-selling EV ever, Leaf. Also, its compact Rogue Hybrid was one of the most efficient crossovers in the market. Now, the new system is on the way, and the 2022 Infiniti QX55 could also take benefits. a better gas mileage and a possible output of 300 hp will draw more attention to the coupe crossover.

Styling

Infiniti surprised fans with a teaser image of this kind of vehicle. A few months they were thrilled to see what’s the company up to. Now, we see the coupe crossover with an attractive design. But, the cool look also brings a few downsides. The sloped roof will decrease visibility through a rear window. Also, passengers in the second row won’t have as much headroom as in the QX50. Finally, the cargo space is also not generous.

But, the QX50 will fix all these problems if you need more room. On the other hand, it is not as attractive as the 2022 Infiniti QX55. We can see in examples of other companies, where coupe SUVs and crossovers sell good, although there are more practical twins with the same platforms and drivetrains.
