2022 Ford Excursion Will Use a New V8 Engine, Diesel Powertrain

The comeback of the 2022 Ford Excursion is one of the hottest rumors regarding the Blue Oval company. Its largest SUV ever might return. There are a few things that point this is not impossible. On the other hand, there are no exact clue, nor official announcement. Ford filed for the registration of the Excursion brand, which is the first official move. Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean too much. The vehicle could be out in 2023 or later.

But, there are a lot of other details. The SUV market is growing. New models are being launched every year. Lineups are expanding in all possible ways. Still, there are no models based on heavy-duty trucks, like the Excursion used to be. Ford is equipped with features and accessories for such an SUV. A new 7.3-liter V8 engine is one of the things we will definitely see on the returning vehicle. Plus, there are diesel units.

So, there are more pros than cons for the 2022 Ford Excursion. Still, the experiment is risky at this moment. The COVID-19 pandemic slowed down the market. Most companies are delaying premieres of models which already hit production. The development of new vehicles is on break in most cases. Investment in the new market, which is not proven yet, is not a smart move. On the other hand, such unpredictable things made Ford so popular and the leading carmaker in the industry.

Is the Comeback Realistic?

Certainly is. Today, crossover and SUV segments are growing every day. Companies are trying to offer more options to their buyers. So, fans can find sub-tiers. Although mid-size two-row SUVs are not as popular as three-row versions, or compact crossover, there are still buyers purchasing such models. Also, recently we are witnessing the creation of a new class. Nissan Rogue Sport is the crossover that fits between compact and subcompact segments. General Motors responded with Chevy Trailblazer.

On the opposite side of the crossover/SUV world, we have Ford Expedition, Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon. These huge rigs are not big enough for some, so we have Expedition Max, Suburban, and Yukon XL as the long-wheelbase versions of full-size SUVs. But, none of these is as big as the Excursion was. So, the comeback of the SUV based on a heavy-duty truck will have its space in the lineup. The biggest question is – will there be a market for such a big model? Well, buyers are usually following words – the bigger, the better (and safer). Still, there won’t be as many sales as Ford has in the compact crossover class, or mid-size SUV tier. But, the 2022 Excursion is definitely going to cover the costs of the building.

2022 Ford Excursion Engines

There are two certain possibilities for the engine room. The most realistic one is an all-new 7.3-liter V8 unit. We could read rumors about the powerplant two years ago. Experts immediately got this one in connection with the biggest SUV ever. Some sources also claimed the new F-150 Raptor truck could borrow it. But, this is not going to happen, since engineers need to respond to Ram Rebel TRX and 700+ hp rated Hellcat unit. Instead, a V8 should become a part of the lineup of the 2022 Ford Excursion. With 430 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque, it will be an excellent choice for the heavy-duty SUV, which is going to be based on the F-250 truck. Well, even the Super Duty pickup is using the same powertrain, which replaced a smaller displacement.

Another option might be a diesel engine. Ford is equipped with its own Powerstroke lineup. However, it is not clear if the company is going after a larger or a smaller unit. A 3.0-liter turbodiesel is delivering 260 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. But, the 2022 Ford Excursion Diesel might borrow the oil-burner from its truck sibling, F-250. In this case, a turbocharged V8 is going to burst more than 400 hp and 900 lb-ft of twist, which can go up over 1,000 pound-feet if required.

Truck-Based, Largest SUV EVER!

It already has this title, but the new 2022 Ford Excursion is ready to become even bigger. Long-wheelbase versions of full-size SUVs are about 225 inches long. The F-250 truck-based model will add at least 5 more inches. Plus, there is a special build that makes it more capable of towing, durable, and reliable. Inside, designers will install three rows and maybe even eight seats. The focus is on the back and entrance through the tailgate. Inside, there will be plenty of space for passengers. The Blue Oval company is going to offer several trim levels, and we expect Platinum or Limited to bring top-notch hi-tech features. A diesel engine is also going to require a kind of 4×4 package. Raptor is not likely, but Ford has a few other suitable bundles for off-road adventures.
