Hellcat Engine Could Revive the Interest in the 2022 Dodge Durango

Jeep Grand Cherokee is not the only SUV that will use the 700+ hp engine anymore. The 2022 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat is joining the lineup and even beats the previous record. The SUV is going to offer 710 horsepower to its owners. Grand Cherokee Trackhawk sits at 707. Also, the FCA added the 6.2-liter supercharged engine to the Ram 1500 truck. The TRX Rebel is slightly downgraded to 702 horsepower.

This is another version of the 2022 Dodge Durango that should make the SUV popular again. For some while, sales are dropping. Although there are interesting configurations, Durango is losing battle to Ford Explorer and Chevy Traverse. The company will keep most of the other trim levels for the 2022 season. There are rumors that the production could be moved since the SUV is going to use the BoF platform. It is enough to make the rumors swirl around.

FCA offers two mid-size SUVs. While Durango is struggling, Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the best-selling models, even without a three-row version. Durango is a five-seater by default, but you can purchase additional two rows for some configurations. So, this is one of the biggest differences between siblings. On the other hand, both of them ride on a unibody platform. So, the ride is pretty similar.

That is why the carmaker is considering moving the 2022 Dodge Durango to the ladder frame. First of all, it will split the class and cut the competition within the same company. Grand Cherokee would stay the unibody version. On the other hand, Durango would again face competition from another Jeep. Grand Wagoneer full-size SUV is announced for the 2021-2022 season. This one will definitely be a seven or even an eight-seater.

2022 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat Specs

For a long time, Grand Cherokee was the most powerful SUV in the market. Tesla managed to beat its 707 hp, but the Jeep remained a leader when speaking of vehicles with an internal combustion engine. Now, the 2022 Dodge Durango SRT is getting a new version, with the Hellcat powerplant. The SRT package previously included a 6.4-liter Hemi mill with 475 hp. We’ve heard that the company is about to enhance the outputs, but experts guessed it would be the same engine with approximately 500 ponies. Instead, the FCA surprised everyone by launching the 2022 Durango Hellcat SRT.

A 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine is the most powerful unit you will find in the SUV segment. For Durango, this one will deliver 710 horsepower, 3 ponies more than the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk can do, and 8 hp more than Ram Rebel TRX. An eight-speed power router sends energy to all wheels. There is no two-speed transfer case. The engine also produces 745 lb-ft of torque, which will make the SUV accelerate 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.

Other Engines

Durango is out there with pretty capable drivetrains. Still, the big SUV is not offering a small 4-cylinder as the entry-level unit. Instead, the Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 is the main choice. It creates 295 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, making the vehicle competitive to similar models in the same class. But, what actually makes the Durango different is a pair of V8 engines. A 5.7-liter mill will be back for the 2022 Dodge Durango. It increases power to 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, you will have to get used to 17 mpg of combined gas mileage. A 6.4-liter V8 was the top of the lineup engine with 475 hp. However, the SRT now has a new powerplant, but an old Hemi configuration should stay available and the new version will be out as SRT Hellcat.

Packages and Accessories

Durango is well-known for the wide lineup of models. Another big upgrade is coming with the new Uconnect 5.0 infotainment system. We still don’t have details, but the first models with fresh multimedia will be available in 2021. Let’s assume that a larger screen and improved voice commands are coming. Even at the base trim, the 2022 Dodge Durango will offer zonal climate control and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity. A seven-seat layout is optional. The 2022 Dodge Durango Hellcat is coming as a five-seater only.

We believe the company will keep the GT version as one of the coolest models in the lineup. It makes the SUV more aggressive with special upgrades, such as 20-inch wheels, or spoilers. There are also trims with a sportier suspension, for improved driving impression, or premium features, such as leather seats and advanced infotainment services.

The price of the 2022 Dodge Durango will go up and the base version won’t be under $35,000. On the other end of the lineup is the SRT Hellcat with a base price of $82,500. Ram 1500 TRX is a bit cheaper, with the Launch Edition packing more stuff and coming with a $90,000 price tag.
