The 2022 Audi Q9 is supposed to be the largest SUV in the company’s lineup. However, there is a lack of official information. Still, after the Q8, fans believe the Q9 is going to debut pretty soon. Recently, Audi obtained rights to the entire Q1-Q9 lineups. The last piece of the puzzle was the Q4, but it is already being introduced as the E-Tron electric crossover. It is not hard to see what’s missing in the squad – the full-size model.

The new model should be larger than 200 inches to be considered as the big rig. Q8 is 196 inches long. The 2022 Audi Q9 will bring a three-row layout and seating capacity for seven. Under the hood, we might see a six-cylinder unit as the base configuration. Be sure that V8 is going to upgrade the power to the level we expect from the luxury vehicle.

The company will also work on safety systems. The MMI infotainment is already among the best in the market. But, Audi plans further upgrades that might include a higher level of autonomous drive. The first prototypes are spied, which means the release date is getting closer.

What we Know so Far?

Shortly after the premiere of the Q8, we saw new Audi mules being tested. MotorAuthority published photos of the larger SUV, which many believe is the Q9. The size is bigger than anything we saw from Audi. On the other hand, there is no official info. The popular magazine expects the production next year and the SUV is going to be the 2023 YM. Well, some sources also claimed the first units were supposed to be built by the end of last year. However, the pandemic spoiled and postponed plans. The 2022 Audi Q9 is the most probable outcome for the new model.

The German company needs to catch up with the competition. BMW recently launched the X7 for the full-size segment. Mercedes is already there with GLS and G-Wagon. The market for such vehicles is big and Audi will definitely look for their piece of the pie. On the other hand, the competition goes behind the German manufacturers, especially in the United States. The worldwide presence will help the 2022 Audi Q9 make a quick breakthrough.

2022 Audi Q9 Engines and Specs

This is a no-brainer – the 2022 Audi Q9 needs a V8 to be competitive. Still, knowing the company’s manners, they could start the offer with a smaller displacement, probably a six-cylinder plant. That is a 3.0-liter displacement with the ability to deliver 335 hp and 370 lb-ft. This is a nice output, but the Q9 is going to be a full-size luxury SUV. Just for an example – rivals in this class are Toyota Land Cruiser, Lexus LX, and Cadillac Escalade. All of these SUVs are able to crack around 400 hp and bring superb performance off the road. Its main rivals, BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS are also more powerful.

That is why we see the 4.0-liter V8 as the main choice for all buyers in the US. This unit is available for the RS variant of the Q8 and cracks 592 hp + 590 lb-ft. well, the base variant of the Q9 is not requiring so much power. So, some lighter configurations might serve as the base offer. A hybrid setup with a 3.0-liter V6 and 17 kWh battery can deliver 455 horsepower, and that is something fans expect to see from the 2022 Audi Q9.

Release Date, Prices

Spy photos are indicating a larger SUV is on the way. There are no doubts that the Audi model is on images, since the four-ring badge sits on the front grille. The company is hiding details, not only on the test mule, but in public appearances as well. So, we don’t have precise details about the release date. The 2022 Audi Q9 will probably come out as the concept, while the production version is going to follow. Outside the US, the SUV is going to be available with diesel engines as well. Also, do not be surprised if the European version debuts before the one we will get in the US.

The price will be competitive, especially with BMW and Mercedes. Don’t let these companies trick you. The base MSRP usually starts lower than on most other Japanese and US vehicles. But, that is because German manufacturers will use six-cylinder units. With V8, the price jumps significantly. Expect the 2022 Audi Q9 to be over $90,000 if you are after an eight-cylinder mill. If engineers decide to squeeze more power from a V8 and the Q9 gets more than 600 hp, the cost will exceed $130,000. The same engine is capable of producing 640 hp on the Lamborghini Urus. We doubt Audi is going to match that. Still, the RS or SQ9 would be a nice addition to go against Mercedes AMG and BMW M models.
