2022 Acura RDX Redesign and Type S Model

1487 0

Everyone is talking about the new MDX. The mid-size SUV is the flagship vehicle, especially now when the Type S model joined the lineup. This was the most anticipated change for the last few years. The large SUV will be under the spotlight next season, so we don’t need to expect too many changes from the 2022 Acura RDX. The compact crossover was redesigned in 2019. Now, it is a better choice to wait for the mid-cycle update scheduled for 2023, rather than to buy pretty much the same vehicle next year.

There are still a few reasons why you should buy the 2022 Acura RDX. The crossover is well equipped for the luxury segment. Plenty of equipment is available even at the base trim level. Upscale models bring more of advanced features. At the top of all – the price is very reasonable compared to the competition. The engine is average. The RDX could use an extra option. The interior is spacious for the compact crossover. Even more important – it is very safe.

Single Engine Choice (For Now)

The 2022 RDX will get the power from a 2.0-liter turbo engine, capable of producing 272 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. It is more than most rivals can do. On the other hand, the vehicle lacks optional drivetrains. The existing powerplant is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and sends power to the front wheels. The gas mileage is 22/28 mpg, and the A-Spec package is making the RDX consume slightly more fuel on the open road. If you pick an all-wheel drive, the crossover returns 21/27 mpg. Towing capacity is more than respectable, at 1,500 pounds.

Definitely, Acura will have to provide additional choices to make the RDX competitive. However, we are not optimistic it is going to happen in 2022. Nevertheless, fans are speaking of two possibilities. The first one is the 2022 Acura RDX Type S. Well, since the performance-oriented model debuted on the larger MDX and in the sedan category, it won’t be impossible to see the compact crossover with beefed setup and styling. Another option is the RDX Hybrid. Its non-premium sibling, Honda CR-V, is one of the fuel-friendliest models in the market, returning more than 40 mpg. Nevertheless, the RDX would have to keep the power outputs high. A combination of hybrid Type S might be the bull’s eye for Acura.

2022 Acura RDX Packages

Like the MDX, the 2022 Acura RDX will be available only as the base trim, and further upgrade is possible through packages. One of them is already mentioned. For the upcoming season, the Type S could be the biggest addition. But, having in mind the crossover is unchanged, the special edition might be saved as the highlight for the redesigned model in 2023 or 2024. Besides power, the Type S also comes with attractive upgrades all around and inside the vehicle. Just take a look at the new MDX and you will know why it is so hot topic.

Until this one shows up, Acura will stick to the existing upgrades. The Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) is definitely our first recommendation. It won’t boost the performance of the crossover, but the driving impression is totally different. We can compare it to Subaru’s famous 4×4 system. The 2022 Acura RDX A-Spec is a $3,000 addition and brings a special audio sound supported by 16 speakers. Ventilated and heated front buckets feature premium leather with contrast stitches. Of course, the steering wheel is wrapped in leather. Unique aluminum and wood trims, with red details, are something special. You will recognize this model from the outside thanks to revised bumpers, 20-inch 5-spoke wheels, fog lights, dual exhaust tips, dark theme…

You will be eligible to pick the A-Spec package only if the Technology bundle is already installed. This one will cost you $2,900 and adds interesting safety and multimedia options. For example, navigation, USB ports for rear seats, HD radio, and special features, such as Song by Voice and Traffic Rerouting, are there as well. A blind-spot monitor is a standard, as well as parking sensors. Advance Package is the most expensive upgrade. It requires a Technology set and investment of an additional $4,900.

2022 Acura RDX Release Date, Price, Competition

The 2022 Acura RDX will be out by the end of the year. The company is working on a mid-cycle facelift, so there won’t be big announcements about the upcoming crossover. You know what it brings. Buyers who don’t like unpredictable changes will probably opt for the 2022 YM and save some money since the next redesign will make the vehicle more expensive. Currently, the mini SUV is priced at $38,200. The SH-AWD will cost $2,000. Fully-loaded RDX gets pretty close to $50,000.

The competition in the compact luxury crossover class is very tough. RDX can make more power than the German models, but these are making the difference with optional engines and the upscale offer. Lexus NX is becoming all-electric, and Infiniti is redesigning the QX50.
