The 2021 Mazda CX-9 redesign will refresh the mid-size SUV. Well, with 200 inches of length, it could be a full-size model. It leaves a lot of room for speculations about the CX-7 model, which should fit between this SUV and a smaller CX-5. The new look is going to attract more buyers, that is for sure. Nevertheless, the Japanese company is still not unveiling details. Fans will have to be patient for a few more months until the upcoming model arrives.

Mazda is going to develop its SkyActiv engines to be more efficient. Unfortunately, a diesel unit is not going to be an option for the US market. But, a turbo-four, which is currently under the hood, will get competition. The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is on the way, although it could debut later. Plus, there are indications that some of the models will go all-electric. It is not planned for CX-9 to be electrified next season. But, in 2022 and 2023, we can expect the first concepts to appear.

Details are blurry, but our sources are claiming the company is working hard on the update. Well, any improvement will make the 2021 Mazda CX-9 even more attractive. This vehicle is one of the best-looking models in the mid-size class. Plus, the interior is very posh, nearly luxurious.

We can check the latest changes in the family to figure out what to expect from the redesign of the upcoming SUV. A larger grille is very probable and fans already imagine this upgrade. With that, CX-9 will also get new headlights and a bumper to complete the facelift. Changes at the back also include updates on lights, tailgate, and exhaust tips. Designers are also trying to make the SUV more aggressive and we could see slopped back of the roof next time the CX-9 steps into the stage.

The cabin of the vehicle, like for all Mazdas, is very attractive. The SUV is big enough to fit the third row of seats. It is a seven-seater by default and upper trim levels offer captain’s chairs in the middle row. There is enough room for passengers and cargo. Currently, maximum cargo space is 71 cubic feet and it is going to drop if designers make the roof sloped. Well, that shouldn’t affect passengers comfort in the third row, since it is suitable only for children.

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is going to be equipped with the latest technology the company has to offer. For now, highlights are a large infotainment screen, a lot of safety features, and excellent voice controls. Even the entry-level version comes packed with a lot of equipment, including 3-zone climate control, keyless entry, and heated front row. Additional upgrades will add a rearview camera, blind-spot monitor, and many driver-aid features. Mazda Connect will include premium audio and a larger, 9-inch touchscreen display.

Engine Specifications

A lot of choices are available for interior and exterior. But, CX-9 didn’t offer such options for drivetrains. A SkyActiv-G remains the main source of power. A 2.5-liter turbo-four unit is capable to deliver 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque when using premium fuel. Non-premium gasoline models will return 230 horsepower and 310 pound-feet. One of the best things about SkyActiv technology is fixing the lags, we used to feel when driving vehicles with turbocharged engines. With so many ponies, a four-pot unit performs like a six-cylinder powerplant.

Front-wheel drive is standard. Also, a six-speed automatic gearbox can send power to all four corners. Unfortunately, the engine is not capable of towing more than 3,500 pounds, which is a huge downside of the CX-9 compared to the competition. The fuel economy numbers are about to go up after the redesign. Lighter body, aesthetic look, and engine upgrades could make 2021 Mazda CX-9 return 30 mpg on the open road with the FWD system.

Hybrid and Diesel

SkyActiv-X technology is taking a swing. More vehicles are going to feature this drivetrain in the future. Definitely, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 will have to offer something to draw more buyers. First, the SUV needs options. Second, it also must catch up with the competition. There are more and more mid-size three-row hybrid SUVs in the market, including Toyota Highlander and Ford Explorer.

On the other hand, the diesel engine is not going to be an option again. The CX-5 is using the SkyActiv-D plant, but it won’t be carried over to its larger sibling. The technology Mazda is using is taking the best from each fuel type engine and takes it to other kinds of units. So, gasoline mills improve the mileage, while diesel plants are cleaner and more powerful.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Price

The redesign will increase the price of the 2021 Mazda CX-9. Still, its nearly premium offer makes it a bargain, even if the base cost jumps to $36,000. The top of the class version is Signature, with Nappa leather, heated captain’s chairs in the middle row, and a unique interior theme. For this package, you will have to pay around $50,000.
