Trusted sources are reporting that the 2021 Mazda CX-7 is coming to Australia. Whatsoever, this model will soon become available in other markets, including the US. The Japanese company is bringing back the SUV and positioning it between its flagship compact crossover CX-5 and the largest model in the lineup CX-9.

The carmaker had a lot of success recently, and they continue to build up their lineup. We saw the first hybrid models and the next step is expanding the lineup with new vehicles. It is still unclear where will the 2021 Mazda CX-7 fit. A mid-size two-row SUV tier is the most likely destination. Whatsoever, there are other possibilities as well – somewhere between mid-size and compact class, or it could be a kind of all-electric vehicle.

Some rumors reported that CX-7 could come back in 2020. But, the most recent news, coming straight from the company, is speaking of 2021 season. It is not unrealistic since the concept is not out yet. Other carmakers are also bringing back their famous models discontinued in the past, and we will see the arrival of Ford Bronco soon, while the Honda Passport is already out.

Why Was Mazda CX-7 Discontinued?

The popularity of the crossover and SUV classes started to grow nearly two decades ago. After a few years, these segments exploded and more and more companies started to build their vehicles. Mazda was one of the most successful carmakers in the market and they also launched both CX-7 and CX-9 in 2006. While the larger model survived the economic crisis, the topic of our article had to be discontinued in 2012. Reasons – slow sales and growing popularity of compact crossovers and 7-seater SUVs. In some way, the CX-5 replaced the CX-7.

Now, the company is ready for the new chapter. They already launched the CX-8 mid-size model. But, this one is available only in Japan, and it is a rebadged version of its largest vehicle. The 2021 Mazda CX-7 will fill the lineup in more markets and offer more options.

2021 Mazda CX-7 Diesel and Petrol Engines

All three available crossover/SUV models in the US are using petrol engines. But, in the rest of the world diesel units are more popular. Emission standards are pretty rigid and it is just a matter of time when these kinds of drivetrains will be discontinued in North America. Well, Mazda is ready for all challenges. Company’s SkyActiv system is one of the most popular in the US and we believe the carmaker will make a clever move with the new SUV.

The main unit for the 2021 Mazda CX-7 will probably be a 2.5-liter powertrain with 225 hp and 310 lb-ft. the turbo-four engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. It sends power to front wheels. The all-wheel drive consumes more fuel. If you use the premium gasoline, then the outputs can raise to 250 horsepower. We doubt the engineers will test the market with a naturally-aspirated version of the same four-cylinder engine since it creates only 190 hp.

The alternative is a diesel engine. The SkyActive-D unit can produce 175 hp and 310 pound-feet of torque. This 2.2-liter can meet Euro 5 emission standards only. However, it will save fuel and the maintenance is not as expensive as you think.

New Styling

The leaked source informed the CX-7 is coming back. But, everything else about this SUV is predictions and speculations. As its name suggests, the new model will settle between two existing vehicles. Larger than the CX-5 and smaller than CX-9, the 2021 Mazda CX-7 will be around 190 inches long with the 110-in wheelbase.

All the latest Mazda’s models are using a similar styling language. So, expect the CX-7 to make no exception. That means the familiar grille is the centerpiece of the front fascia and the recognizable red color is the main paint for the SUV. Inside the cabin,

Mazda is going to install a lot of latest features, with a focus on connectivity. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM radio, Bluetooth, wireless charging, navigation… some will be standard, while others will also be available through optional packages. Reserved package is the most exclusive offer, while you should look for the Grand Touring model with the best price/equipment ratio.
