The 2021 Ford Escape is an all-new crossover with fresh colors, trim levels, equipment, and engines. The vehicle will be now more competitive to Toyota Rav4, which sets some standards for the hybrid class. Well, the Japanese carmaker is a step ahead of the competition with the Prime PHEV model for the next season. However, Escape will also get the same version. According to rumors, next season we can expect the premiere.
The crossover is already available in several trim levels, but three more could become part of the lineup in 2021. The ST could take the performance-oriented spot. The 2021 Ford Escape PHEV is going to be even more efficient than the standard hybrid and a rival to Toyota Rav4 Prime. Finally, we can hear things about the possible Escape Raptor model. Well, we don’t believe in it because of the simple reason – the new Bronco is bringing Bronco Sport off-road version.
2021 Ford Escape vs Rav4
Let’s start the analysis with one of the biggest rivalries in the market. There are no too many other vehicles that have such huge sales combined. Only the truck segment can do it better. For a few years, Rav4 is the best-seller in the US. It is also very popular in the rest of the world. Ford Escape appears as Kuga outside the US. One of the reasons for Rav4’s popularity is its efficient hybrid engine. For some while, this was the only crossover with a 40 mpg rating. But, first Honda CR-V and now Escape set new standards. Ford is now a leader with 44 miles per gallon.
The upcoming season will bring a new battle. Toyota is launching the plug-in version of the Rav4, called Prime. Soon after this info broke out, we could hear rumors about the 2021 Ford Escape PHEV. The release date is not set yet, but the Blue Oval company needs to speed up the development if they want to catch up with the Japanese carmaker.
Raptor vs ST Model
Escape is available in S, SE, SEL, and Titanium levels, while the hybrid engine gets only the SE Sport package. That is not all since Ford is planning more upgrades. ST and Raptor models are options. According to TopSpeed, the Escape ST is going to take advantage of a 2.3-liter turbo engine, capable of producing 300 hp. This is enough for a sporty crossover, 50 horsepower more than a 2.0-liter turbo-four unit, the most powerful unit available in the existing lineup. Of course, there are other styling upgrades that will make the vehicle sportier and comfortable.
The less likely option is the 2021 Ford Escape Raptor. With the F-150 truck only vehicle using this package, it is not certain to see it on the compact crossover. Fans expect it rather on Explorer or Bronco SUVs. Still, a lighter Raptor vehicle might create a boom on the market.
2021 Ford Escape Trim Levels, Equipment
The entry-level model of the 2021 Ford Escape will be the S package. It is making the crossover pretty equipped. A 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine is capable of producing 180 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque, and returns 30 mpg combined. The Escape S is using Co-Pilot 360 safety bundle and 4.5-inch display, which is significantly smaller than most other compact crossovers are using.
The SE trims come with the same features and upgrades a few things. For example, a larger screen and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capability. The driver’s bucket is power adjustable in 10 ways. SEL is nearly a premium model with hands-free tailgate and remote start. Seats have a memory function and the steering wheel is heated. Titanium is bringing higher-level safety options, larger wheels, and Bang&Olufsen audio.
The 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid is available with only one package – SE Sport. A 2.5-liter hybrid unit is under its hood and produces 200 hp. The highlight is a fuel economy, which reaches 44 mpg. The gauge cluster is larger and the bundle also includes black mirror caps and grille details.
The palette of paintjobs for the 2021 Ford Escape will be updated. The compact crossover offers eight different colors even at the entry-level model. These are Agate Black, Ingot Silver, Sedona Orange, Dark Persian Green, Velocity Blue, Magnetic, Oxford White, and Desert Gold. The SE also adds Star White and Rapid Red, but these are premium options that cost $600 and $400. Titanium drops Oxford White. Hybrid model offers all ten possible colors for the Escape.
2021 Ford Escape Price, PHEV Release Date
The starting MSRP of the Escape is $25,000 before upgrades. The SE adds $2k and SEL is just under $30,000. The most expensive version for some while will be Titanium until the PHEV edition appears. The 2021 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid is going to arrive next year and the Blue Oval company is not going to rush with it. However, they need to respond to threats by Toyota. The price of the PHEV model will probably start around $35,000 and we still don’t know which packages will be available for this model. Raptor and ST are also high-end versions that could top this price.
