Everything was ready for the debuts of the 2021 Chevy Equinox compact crossover and Traverse three-row SUV. And then, the COVID-19 happened. Factories are shut down. The automotive industry is almost dead. It will need some time for recovery. That is why General Motors moved most of the debuts for the 2022 season. Nevertheless, the long-awaited full-size SUV class will be in dealerships since the company produced some amount of these models.
The new crossover was introduced right at the time when the virus started to spread. At the Chicago car show, we saw the premiere of the new model with some serious updates. Nevertheless, we will have to wait a bit longer to see the crossover at dealerships.
What we like about the new 2021 Chevy Equinox? In short – the more aggressive appearance. Most other cool modifications are reserved for upper trim levels. The RS package is new and it is based on the larger Blazer. Another vehicle inspired with this SUV is canceled for now – Trailblazer, which many saw as Equinox’ replacement. Well, both models are going to be available soon.
Changes That are Postponed for 2022
So, the 2021 Chevy Equinox was supposed to bring big updates. The third generation debuted in 2018 and this is the mid-cycle refresh. Compact crossover class is currently the most popular segment and Chevrolet 30 percent of sales of small and mid-size SUVs go on the Equinox. General Motors was trying to improve its chances with a lot of new models, but even the bigger names will see the new versions in 2022.
One of the iconic models, Camaro pony car, was the first one to introduce the new styling language, which was later used for the Blazer SUV. Now, the 2021 Chevy Equinox will find the inspiration at the same place. The debut in Chicago was impressive and the audience was delighted with the fresh styling.
Like said, the crossover is based on the Chevrolet Camaro. The shield grille is the highlight of the exterior update. The front fascia gets a whole new look and carries the momentum to the rear end. LED lamps are in the lights, including the DRLs. Higher trim levels are bringing more features and updates, including special details. We will talk about the RS model a bit later. The 2021 Chevy Equinox Premier is also coming with some unique details, such as so-called French upholstery stitches, or black finishes on the dashboard.
2021 Chevy Equinox RS: Premiere and Features
There are a few further upgrades the RS model is bringing. Nevertheless, it doesn’t step up with another engine option. The first impression is that 2021 Chevy Equinox RS is going to be the most-wanted version. Special wheel design will draw the attention, while the interior is not going to disappoint anyone. Leather upholstery and red stitches make the cabin very sporty and elegant.
2021 Chevy Equinox Engines and Specs
Under the bonnet of the 2021 Chevy Equinox won’t be changes. General Motors dropped the turbodiesel motor, although this kind of engine achieves higher popularity since Silverado truck started using it. So, the base variant is coming with a 1.5-liter turbo-four. This drivetrain is good for starters and buyers looking for a good fuel economy. 170 ponies won’t make most fans happy. On the other hand, 205 lb-ft of torque and 28 mpg combined are good reasons to purchase the base model.
The Equinox is going to bring it on with a 2.0-liter turbo engine. In this case, the larger displacement is producing 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of twist. Of course, the price is paid with higher fuel consumption. Nevertheless, the crossover will still return respectable 25 mpg.
The vehicle sells well. Still. The Equinox misses a hybrid unit in the lineup. For example, the best-selling models in the compact crossover segment can do 40 mpg – Honda CR-V, Toyota Rav4, and Ford Escape. Diesel model provided better mileage, but it is in the books now. The new chapter has to start with a hybrid unit if Chevrolet wants to keep up with the competition. Not only the abovementioned vehicles are out in the market with hybrid drivetrains, but also Nissan Rogue, and some premium models – Lexus NX, Volvo XC60, BMW X3.
Release Date Rescheduled – Here is When the 2021 Chevy Equinox Debuts
So, it is now official – the 2021 Chevy Equinox will show up as 2022 YM. The vehicle will be launched as soon as factories start working again. We saw the premiere of the crossover and GM won’t change anything in the next couple of months. Well, everything was ready for production when the COVID-19 blasted and slowed down the entire world. It seems that situation is calming down, but the people and industry will need some time to recover. That is why General Motors was forced to postpone the debut of new Equinox, Traverse, and even Silverado and Camaro.
