Immediately when the new Terra model debuted at Shanghai Auto Show, the speculations about the 2020 Nissan Xterra started to roll. This model was one of the most popular off-road SUVs ten years ago. But, the company eventually discontinued it and replaced with Murano and Pathfinder in the USA. X-Trail and Patrol are models for the rest of the world. However, the US market really lacks a true off-road model. This spot can’t be filled by upgrading some of the existing SUVs with Pro-4X package.
The new 2020 Nissan Xterra could be built on the body-on-frame platform the Frontier truck is using. This is speculation that has sense, especially when we know the Terra concept is suing Navara’s architecture. The relationship between these two and the SUV/truck for the US market will be very similar. So, the new Xterra could fit into the lineup without threating to other existing models in the lineup, Murano and Pathfinder.
2020 Nissan Xterra Redesign and Modernization
It is rugged SUV and its chassis still can serve. However, the redesign is required after five years of pause. The new 2020 Nissan Xterra will introduce some of the latest features the company has to offer. At first place, there is a ProPilot, one of the most advanced self-driving system. Whatsoever, the new Xterra must be eye-catching. We believe the company is going to use the Terra SUV as the role model for the US version of the vehicle. Spy pictures are not yet available to show us any sign of development.
Since the company is targeting an off-road slot for the 2020 Nissan Xterra, the SUV is not going to be a seven-seat model. Two rows will be enough and five persons will have enough space for legs and head. The SUV will also leave enough cargo space. If we throw a glance at the new Terra, we can find some interesting options that could be carried over to the Xterra. For example, sliding rear seats with 60/40 split are a perfect combination. Of course, by folding them, you can create extra space for towing. Nevertheless, the lack of the third row will leave more room behind rear seats.
Nissan recently introduced the new generation of its ProPilot. The 2.0 system is allowing drivers a hands-free driving on the highway. Well, the company is yet to decide which models are getting this feature, but the new SUV must be on the shortlist. Few radars, cameras, and sensors will allow the driver to relax during the ride. A vehicle can keep the lane and the distance from surrounding cars. Whatsoever, the system will make that driver is on alert and react if needed.
2020 Nissan Xterra Specs
The drivetrain for the 2020 Nissan Xterra is a real mystery. The company already has reliable V6 engines that can offer more or less power, depending on needs. Well, the 2020 Nissan Xterra could borrow a 4.0-liter drivetrain from Frontier truck. This unit is capable to deliver 260 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Well, the towing capacity is maximized, although the rival SUVs can produce more power with their 3.5 and 3.6 engines. Nissan’s 4.0 needs an update, especially the 5-speed transmission. The good thing is that you can find a manual gearbox when this kind of case is dying.
Another possibility is a 3.5-liter V6 with 285 hp. The drivetrain is used by Pathfinder mid-size three-row SUV. The towing capacity drops from 6,500 pounds to 6,000 lbs. On the other hand, gas mileage difference is significant, although the 2020 Nissan Xterra will harm it with off-road nature and adventures. For the Murano SUV, the same engine is producing 260 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque.
Whatever drivetrain Nissan chooses for its upcoming model, we are sure it is getting a special off-road package. The 2020 Nissan Xterra Pro-4X will improve traction and overall performance on tough terrains. What’s more, the ladder frame is more durable and way better for such conditions than the standard unibody concept. For the Titan truck, this package adds hill descent control and start/stop feature. The long list of accessories also shows these upgrades: electronic locking rear differential, Bilstein shocks, 18-inch wheels wrapped with all-terrain tires, Sonar system, and many more things. There are also some notable interior upgrades that will make a ride safer and more comfortable.
2020 Nissan Xterra USA Release Date
We believe that 2020 Nissan Xterra will be the US version of the new Terra SUV that debuted last year in China. Whatsoever, Nissan USA is still quiet about this upgrade for its lineup that will make them competitive with Toyota 4Runner and upcoming Ford Bronco. The new Xterra will be announced later this year or the premier could happen during 2020 with the late launch to dealerships. Speculations about the return already caused the interest among fans and rival companies. The price of the new model will settle somewhere between $30,000 and $35,000.
