Expectations are high for the new 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. One of its sibling and rivals at the same time, Dodge Durango, will clear the path since it becomes a body-on-frame SUV. Grand Cherokee, on the other side, upgrades its offer with a diesel engine and the third-row seat. So many options are available, so you can build a basic SUV that costs $33,000 or a super luxurious and high-performance vehicle with the price tag over $80,000.
The current model is pretty old, dating back from 2011. However, numerous updates make the Grand Cherokee modern and ready to respond to all challenges set by the competition. The new generation will arrive after the 2021 season. For the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we will see another portion of facelift changes which will refresh the appearance. Under the hood is the same drivetrain lineup. Top of the line model is Trackhawk with an engine that delivers 707 horsepower.
The base model is using a V6 engine that is capable to deliver enough power to compete with Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, and Ford Explorer. The power outputs are 295 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque and 22 mpg combined for front-wheel drive. Also, the SUV is available with AWD. Actually, V6s engines are the only that offer 2WD in the entire lineup. Another V6 is turbodiesel. A 3.0 displacement is capable to deliver 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. This model is there to offer better towing capacity and a higher mpg rating. The SUV can reach 30 mpg on the highway.
V8 Engines and Trackhawk Edition
There are three V8 engines available for the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The smallest one is a 5.7-liter unit which creates 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard for the entire fleet. In this case, it distributes energy to all wheels. Fuel economy is still respectable with 14/22 mpg for city/highway. The most powerful standard edition is the SRT. It uses a 6.4-l V8 unit with 475 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. This one kills the fuel economy by dropping the output to 15 mpg combined.
The last engine is the most impressive one. The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is using a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 for stunning 707 hp and 645 lb-ft of twist. It makes Grand Cherokee the most powerful SUV in the USA. The same engine can produce 717 or 797 ponies for the famous Dodge Challenger pony car. The SUV could get some boost, but don’t expect it to go after 800 horsepower limit.
2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Redesign and Three-Row Model
Next year we will see the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee as a seven-seater SUV. The vehicle belongs to the mid-size class, but all this time, there was space for the third row. Some buyers gave up buying a five-seat version. So, one of the major downsides is fixed now.
The redesign will refresh both exterior and interior of the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Inside, the third row will cause a new layout. It is not impossible to see the larger cabin riding on the same wheelbase. Well, the SUV is keeping the five-seat configuration as well. Outside, a facelift will change grille and headlights. However, these modifications are not too big to make the Grand Cherokee hard to recognize.
FCA Will Build More 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Units
Recently, the company announced big plans for the future. The FCA had two mid-size SUVs in the market. Besides the Grand Cherokee, there is also Dodge Durango. Jeep’s vehicle is the best-selling one, but the rivalry definitely is not making good for both of them. So, the FCA decides to move Durango to the body-on-frame platform and its production will be at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant. The new SUV will use the same platform as the Ram 1500 truck, which means a more rigid look and character.
On the other hand, the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee will have more space. Yes, the existing plant will be used for the production of upcoming Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. However, these two SUVs are due for the 2021 season. Also, the departure of the Dodge Durango will cut down one of the opponents in the mid-size three-row class. Major rivals to the 2020 Grand Cherokee are Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Ford Explorer, Chevy Tahoe.
2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Release Date and Price
The new 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee will arrive later this year. The company could announce it every moment. The price of the base model will stay around $33,000. Grand Cherokee is already one of the most expensive vehicles you can choose in the same tier. Other upgrades will make it even less affordable, with top Trackhawk model’s price going over $85,000 and SRT coming with the $70,000 tag. Trailhawk will offer the best cost-to-quality ratio with a price tag of $45,000.
