Expedition is the biggest SUV in the lineup… at the moment. The 2024 Ford Excursion might take over this title. The nameplate used to be the largest SUV and now the company consider its comeback. Here are a few things about the new Excursion – it will be built on the platform used by the F-250 HD truck, it will use a 7.3-liter engine, and even a Powerstroke turbodiesel is possible. The SUV starts the new class- the heavy-duty SUV segment. We are not sure how popular this one could be, but an old Excursion still has a lot of fans.
The 2024 Ford Excursion can be compared to the Expedition SUV and F-250 truck. Of course, the new model will be a mix of two classes, taking the best from both. So, the styling and practicality of the SUV, while towing capacity and performance are coming from the HD truck segment. Imagining this creature is mind-blowing.
Under the Hood
A huge SUV is getting a big engine. Ford has an excellent choice. The 7.3-liter V8 is a new petrol drivetrain that can deliver enough power for heavy-duty trucks. So, it will be suitable for the truck-based SUV as well. We’ll see how the engineers are going to configure it. For the F-250 Super Duty, this unit can deliver 430 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The 2024 Ford Excursion might get the same outputs and a 10-speed automatic transmission. The heavy-duty SUV will definitely be one of the best haulers in the market. Jeep Grand Wagoneer pushed the limit above 10k pounds. Previously, Ford Expedition offered the best towing capacity with 9,300 lbs. And that was possible with a turbocharged V6 unit. Most other full-size SUVs are using a V8.
2024 Ford Excursion Diesel
Another option for the HD SUV is the Powerstroke oil burner. A 6.7-liter turbodiesel can provide 475 hp and an astonishing amount of torque – 1,050 lb-ft. Ram and GM trucks can’t do it better. But, the question is – does the 2024 Ford Excursion needs so much power? Instead, the company might focus on the more efficient ride, rather than high outputs and towing capacities. Ford doesn’t want the Excursion as a competitor to the F-250 truck.
Other options are also smaller blocks. But, the largest SUV in the market needs to top the outputs. So, a six-cylinder turbodiesel and 250 hp doesn’t seem too attractive. Also, a turbo V6 petrol mill would be the same as the Expedition’s configuration.
Expectations
It’s been a few years since the comeback rumors are floating. But, there are no official statements to boost the speculations. The introduction of the 7.3 Godzilla engine was a reason to believe the 2024 Ford Excursion is possible. Also, the new generations of Super Duty trucks and Expedition SUV can show us in which direction the heavy-duty SUV could be developed. The previous version was pretty popular, but it was discontinued because of the lack of efficiency. A hybrid version can do it now since back in the day those systems were not so widespread.
Ford can count on the lack of competition. Other companies are reconsidering options for the full-size segment. On the other hand, a larger SUV is not in the plans of any other carmaker. At least there are no speculations. But, once in the market, the Excursion will probably face competition from Ford’s archrival – Chevy. Suburban is currently the biggest model in the market, but it is in the same class as the Expedition Max.
2024 Ford Excursion Release Date
The arrival of the 2024 Ford Excursion is not confirmed yet. It is late to see it as the 2023 YM. But, we don’t expect big updates for major models by the Blue Oval. So, they can focus on new projects, such as Excursion. However, the stumbling block is the size of the vehicle. The interest is not too high in such an SUV. Plus, the price is going to be over $60,000.
