The 2020 Chevy Captiva is the new model that is an overseas sibling to the Chevrolet Equinox. The compact crossover debuted in China, where it is going to be called Baojun 530. The second generation of Captiva will also arrive in other markets with a bow-tie badge.
The company downsized drivetrains. The lineup is not complete yet, but the Chinese version is going to use 1.5 and 1.8 petrol units instead of 2.4 and 3.0 displacements. A 2.0-liter diesel is the only remaining drivetrain from the previous generation, for now.
One of the main questions is the name of the 2020 Chevy Captiva for different markets. The company announced that they want to expand the Equinox. That means less Captive crossovers. AS replacement already started in some areas (Uzbekistan, Australia, South Korea). Still, the existing crossover will be available in most markets we already saw it.
Captiva is a 7-seater model, although it belongs to the compact segment. Designers created enough space for the third row, which is the best suit for children, though.
Under the bonnet of the 2020 Chevy Captiva will be a 1.5-liter petrol engine by default. The company downsizes the base drivetrain from the 2.4-liter model. But, the new one comes with turbochargers and delivers more power. Buyers can get the variant with 140, 145, and 147 horsepower. The torque level is also selectable – 170 or 180 pound-feet (230/250 Nm).
Engineers are pairing the engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. Depending on a market, alternatives are either a six-speed dual-clutch or an automatic CVT gearbox.
Exclusively in China buyers will have a 1.8-liter displacement as an optional drivetrain. A larger unit creates 135 hp and 137 lb-ft (185 Nm) of twisting power. It uses a five-speed manual transmission.
Finally, there is a diesel drivetrain available for the 2020 Chevy Captiva. A 2.0-liter displacement is currently confirmed only for an Indian market. Well, we believe this is going to be one of the main options in most countries. A diesel unit is producing 170 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Previously, the engine with the same displacement managed to create 150 hp and 235 lb-ft. A six-speed manual is the only available transmission.
2020 Chevy Captiva Hybrid
We are pretty sure this is not the complete engine lineup for the upcoming 2020 Chevy Captiva. The company will add more drivetrains. One of them could be hybrid. They are planning the same with Equinox in the USA, and Baojun 530 in China. In a matter of fact, the Chinese model could be the first one to get it.
Engineers will probably pair a 2.4-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric engine. The crossover will gain some extra power. However, the main upgrade will be in the gas mileage section. The new Captiva Hybrid will offer much better fuel economy, that is for sure. However, we still don’t have estimations.
2020 Chevy Captiva Changes
The new 2020 Chevy Captiva is going to be slightly larger than its predecessor. The crossover gains 2 extra inches and some experts are already considering Captiva as the mid-size SUV. Still, it offers three rows of seats and that is one of the hottest topics when we speak of this model.
For the vehicle that is 183 inches long, a five-seat configuration is the perfect choice. However, the company is adding two more spots, although the third row is obviously cramped. Still, this gives an option, so if you don’t need it, you can stick up to the two-row model.
The 2020 Chevy Captiva will introduce the new styling. It is much different than its predecessor. The crossover is getting split headlights and DRLs. The position near the bonnet line looks stylish and elegant. The company is still quiet about details and features we might find inside the new Captiva. However, it will depend on trim levels, which will be different for each market.
2020 Chevy Captiva Release Date
The all-new 2020 Chevy Captiva was presented in the first half of the year. Back then, chiefs confirmed the crossover will be available for sale in the final quarter of 2019. We are getting closer to this date and we hope the company will stick up to the plan. Captiva’s Chinese relative, Baojun 530, is already out. However, we can’t compare these two totally, especially in infotainment and safety segments.
One of the main rivals to the 2020 Captiva will be Nisan Rogue. However, the compact crossover market is the most attractive to buyers thanks to nice outputs of these machines. Affordable price and fuel economy are drawing attention. Toyota Rav4, Ford Kuga, and Hyundai Tucson are other models you can consider if you are after a vehicle from this class.
