2020-2021 Best European crossover SUVs

2020-2021 Best European crossover SUVs Not Available in the US… YET!

Donald Trump based its election campaign on the protection of US carmakers. Increased taxes for import vehicles was something that will make Ford and GM, and their employees safe. However, it seems like the president is changing its mind since the latest reports suggest that the US could open the market for more European vehicles.

Like in the US, crossovers and SUVs are the best-selling models across the ocean. Well, European buyers don’t have full-size SUVs such as the Nissan Armada, Ford Expedition, and similar. Compact and subcompact classes are popular, while there are more and more mid-size three-row models. Finally, we will find some lookalikes of the US crossover SUVs with other names in Europe.

All in all, the segment is rich. We found a few interesting models that could head to the US as soon as the market opens for import. Here is the list of vehicles we could see soon in North America.

2021 Nissan X-Trail

A huge redesign is on the way for the 2021 Nissan X-Trail. If we have to find its sibling in the US, that would be Rogue, one of the best-selling models. We also spotted this American crossover under the heavy camo, which means only one thing – big changes. Details are not precise yet, but we can hear that Nissan is developing a lot of novelties inside and outside.

The 2021 Nissan X-Trail will use the 1.3-liter inline-four engine which is capable to produce 160 hp. The carmaker is not delivering units with this drivetrain outside Europe. So, this is going to be a big chance for US drivers to meet this fuel-friendly unit. Of course, diesel engines are not an option. X-Trail uses the same mills as Rogue – a 2.5-liter four-pot engine, and a hybrid setup based on a 2.0-liter powerplant.

2020 VW Touareg

Volkswagen is a very popular nameplate in the US, even after the scandal with CO2 emission reports. Their SUV lineup in this part of the world offers Tiguan and Atlas, while one of the most popular European models is missing. The 2020 VW Touareg will be unchanged for the next couple of seasons after the vehicle entered the new generation in 2019. At the same time, the German carmaker introduced Atlas in the United States, which is the closest sibling to Touareg.

The new model is larger than its predecessor. It gained 3 inches in length and 1.7 inches in width. The 2020 VW Touareg is still using the MLB platform, which also underpins some of the SUVs in North America – Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne. Although bigger, the 2020 Volkswagen Touareg is lighter than before, which causes better maneuvering of this 190-inch long SUV. The new SUV is also a three-row model with a seating capacity for seven persons.

2021 Mitsubishi Pajero

It’s been a while since we saw something big from the Mitsubishi and its most famous SUV, Pajero. The latest generation dates back to 2006. Ever since we didn’t see any major update on this aging model. Well, the Japanese company is active in the US market. You can find Outlander with the plug-in hybrid system. However, besides this one, there is no other crossover SUV available for purchase.

The model for the 2020 season is out. Changes are modest. So, with a lot of hopes, we expect the next one, the 2021 Mitsubishi Pajero. Fans not only in Europe but all across the globe expect many changes and updates on this model. Besides the redesign, the 2021 Pajero should get a hybrid configuration to boost gas mileage. It could open the door of the US market for this iconic SUV.

2021 Ford Kuga

The 2020 Kuga is an all-new model. The company launched a new generation and there are plenty of changes in this compact crossover SUV. Still, the company hasn’t spoken the final word yet. The 2021 Ford Kuga should become a seven-seater SUV. The current version offers five spots, like its US brother, Ford Escape. Buyers in North America can purchase a seven-seat Explorer, but the compact crossover is not going to get the third row.

The new Kuga is lighter than before. Designers managed to cut 200 pounds. What is more important, we will also see the 2021 Ford Kuga PHEV with an extended range. Besides the hybrid setup, there are four other combinations available for the new SUV. While the engine choice is wide, the only transmission is going to be an eight-speed auto.

2020 Renault Koleos

Another fresh model on the European market. The 2020 Renault Koleos might be one of the favorites to land first on the US market. But, that depends. The French carmaker is a part of the huge Nissan-Renault alliance. If we have to find its counterpart in North America, it would be Nissan Rogue. Unlike the X-Trail, the new Koleos is longer and Renault’s C Platform underpins this model.

Under the bonnet of the compact crossover SUV is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 170 hp. Buyers in other markets can also find a 2.0-l unit. The diesel model is quite popular in Europe, but it is not heading across the ocean. We’ll see if the new 2020 Renault Koleos is going to borrow the hybrid drivetrain from Nissan’s lineup. If this happens, we will have one of the potential stars for the 2021 season.

2020 Peugeot 5008

Ford vs GM, Mustang vs Camaro, Nissan vs Toyota, BMW vs Audi, Renault vs Peugeot. Two French powerhouses are going at each other in every segment. The latest battle we will see is on the crossover SUV market. It seems that 2020 Peugeot 5008 will be a step ahead of Koleos since the vehicle is introducing a hybrid drivetrain. Plus, we are getting a restyling.

What’s more, the 2020 Peugeot 5008 is a seven-seater. Its third-row might be cramped, but it still offers an option. Of course, there is a French touch inside the cabin, to make everything look more elegant. The overall shape is the same, but the details matter. There are a new grille, LED lights, larger air intakes, wheels… The price of the 2020 Peugeot 5008 is not cheap. The MSRP starts at 29,000 euros, while the hybrid costs 45,000 euros ($50,000).

2020 Opel Grandland X

Grandland is still young. But, Opel is upgrading its largest SUV at the moment with every new update. For the 2020 season, we get a hybrid engine. This is the plug-in system that combines a 1.6-liter petrol unit with two electric motors mounted on the rear axle. The 4×4 hybrid system is delivering 300 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic gearbox is a power router, while the electric range of the SUV is 50 kilometers (30 miles).

This is just the beginning of the electrification process. Opel announced that its entire fleet will get a hybrid or PHEV unit by 2024. Meanwhile, the Grandland X could get the all-electric version. If you are looking for smaller models by the same carmaker, then there are Crossland X and Mokka X. The price of the 2020 Opel Grandland X starts at 33,000 euros, while the PHEV is 6,000 euros higher. In the UK, you will find this model as 2020 Vauxhall Grandland X.

2021 Suzuki Grand Vitara

The current, third generation of Suzuki Vitara is counting down its days in the market. the Japanese company announced the new series of the vehicles coming in 2021. Besides the cosmetic changes, the fresh model will get a new-old name – 2021 Suzuki Grand Vitara. We know this one from the second generation that was available 1998-2005. Now, Suzuki is about to bring it back with new plans. Is one of them a conquer of the US market?

Well, the company pulled out of this part of the world in 2012 due to slow sales. However, some of their vehicles are still popular there. Fans are reading updates and we could see that new Jimny caused a lot of discussions. With the 2021 Suzuki Grand Vitara coming next year, the Japanese carmaker teases its fans in the US even more. We believe that in the near future Suzuki is coming back.

2020 Dacia Duster

Dacia is a Romanian carmaker owned by Renault. The partnership between these two companies revived the lineup and delivered some new models. Definitely, the flagship crossover is the 2020 Dacia Duster. It is the cheapest model you can find in Europe. Its destiny of being a part of the US lineup is an impossible mission. Still, if you are not asking for too much, then the 2020 Duster can offer the base equipment and features for any crossover SUV.

Novelties for this model are the new engine and small cosmetic updates. It is a 1.0-liter three-cylinder unit with 100 hp and 120 lb-ft of torque. Again, this is Renault’s product, which serves as the premium version of the 2020 Dacia Duster. Well, there is not too much excitement about this model, besides the low price. Still, with upgrades, additional packages, and 4×4 drive, Duster could become a respectable model.

2020 Skoda Kodiaq

The 2020 Skoda Kodiaq is redesigned for the new season. The next-gen SUV will have to wait for a few years more. This is the largest Skoda SUV. Like Dacia, the Czech company is owned by a larger corporation – Volkswagen. The revival of Skoda started when the VW purchased their shares and it turned out to be the best move for the Czech carmaker. Now, it is one of the respectable names in the market.

The 2020 Skoda Kodiaq is based on the VW Tiguan. A cheaper version is not offering some of the advanced features, but it is not cheap, like Dacia Duster. The new model was spied with significant changes. The facelift brings the new nose with fresh grille and headlights. The new model could gain an extra room inside, which will make a ride in the third row more comfortable. Still, we don’t recommend adults to seat back there.

2020 Nissan Qashqai

While the X-Trail is equivalent to Rogue in the US, the 2020 Nissan Qashqai is more like Rogue Sport. The Japanese company is redesigning one of the best-selling models in Europe. We didn’t rank it higher in this list since we don’t believe in its arrival to the US. Well, the company recently launched an all-new Rogue Sport. At the moment, there is no vacant spot in the US lineup for the 2020 Nissan Qashqai.

However, the crossover is not so popular in Europe by chance. The company recently introduced a new 1.3-liter petrol engine. Now, we can hear that 2020 Nissan Qashqai is getting a hybrid setup. There are no details available about the new drivetrain. Some sources say it will be based on Nissan’s ePower concept, while other opinions are mentioning Mitsubishi’s PHEV already available in the US for Outlander.

A new level of performance – 1.3-litre 140 & 160PS petrol engine

2020 SEAT Tarraco

The 2020 SEAT Tarraco is not easy to find, either in Europe. Chances of this Opel-based company to reach US shores are minimal. But still, buyers in the United Kingdom and Spain have a cool option. The 2020 SEAT Tarraco is a 187-inch long crossover SUV available with a couple of petrol engines and one diesel unit. But, the biggest update for the new model is the PHEV system with 240 horsepower and improved fuel economy.

Besides the mechanical upgrades, the new 2020 SEAT Tarraco will add the new trim level. It is the FR version with a 9-inch infotainment system and sport seats and steering wheel. Additional options include trailer assist and parking heater. Outside, we will find 19-inch wheels and new colors. Wheel arches are bigger than for the standard model, the rear spoiler is added, and there is a special grille for the FR trim.

2020 DS7 Crossback

DS Automobiles is the premium brand of the PSA group. The platform is similar to Opel and Peugeot models, but the materials used for building the 2020 DS7 Crossback are making this SUV a lot different. Well, the price illustrates the level of luxury you can expect from this model.

DS cut the production in 2011, but it revives in 2017 when we saw the all-new SUV. The 2020 DS7 Crossback is 180 inches long and it offers plenty of options, including a hybrid setup. The turbocharged four-cylinder unit is paired with a couple of electric motors. There are also conventional gasoline engines – a 1.2 and 1.6, while diesel lineup offers 1.5 and 2.0 displacements. The model for the 2020 season is mostly unchanged. If you are looking for a non-premium model, then the PSA group also offers the Citroen C5 Aircross with similar engine options, but the less quality on the build materials.
